My New Chicken

This is another little find that I found today at the second garage sale that I went too. I forgot all about it when I posted earlier today. As you can see, it is not a live chicken at all! It is made of a heavy wire. It's pretty neat, although it is rusted. I'm thinking of trying to sand it down so that I can paint it. I'm thinking that little job may take forever so "Rustie" the new chicken just may stay rusty. What would you do with Rustie? Leave her alone or sand and paint? Photo: My own

I'd leave her alone, it looks like it would be way too time consuming to get all that rust off.

That's my concern, I may do the comb and see how long it takes. We will see next spring.

@rebelann I found one but it was fairly expensive at like $65 for a gallon. I'm just going to leave her alone through the winter anyway.

For yard art and staying in the yard, yes. Carol gave me idea of putting her on my kitchen island as a centerpiece. I think I'd want to clean her up for that.

@kareng If you want to use it as a centerpiece, I agree with you, you have to clean it up.

I gathered a few feathers from the chicken coop today and started making Rustie a tail. Haha. I'll have to take a pic when I get enough in! Yep, if I could just shut the dogs up at night we would be able to sleep. We haven't had another *bad* incident though. Yay!

@crazyhorseladycx No new pups here. This stray has been here for a few years so she is now home. She's a good little dog and we are attached to her now. Both of them are good and usually only bark when someone pulls in driveway, is walking down the road, or working across the street (electrical or road work) or stray dog around...or critters in the night.

@kareng really? can't wait to see such :) i presume such's from the new pup'n the others're followin' suit? 'f 'tis 't jest too much goin' 'round yer place'n the darkness? i confess to havin' one 'f those silent zapper thingies. got the neighbors pups purty well trained these days. 's fer mine, if'n the red pup goes off, ya best get out there. he 'nly barks when somethin' 'tis amiss. will let'cha know if'n 2 legs 'r 4. i shall miss that boy when he's gone. 'tis 'lready 11yrs young. ya can train yer pups with that gadget, too. jest be sure'n check to make certain there'd be nothin' amiss 'fore ya hit the button. praise the dickens out'a 'em if'n such 'tis warranted. otherwise, a firm quiet'n zap. they learn quickly. oh, doesn't really zap 'em, 'tis jest a high pitched frequency. i'd ne'er harm one.

Leave Rusty rusty. You can dress her up with some fancy feathers or something for the holidays. Have fun with decorating her.

Now that's an idea that I can do. I have chicken feathers..lol. I can use them. Also putting a little jacket on her would be cute for the winter.

The problem with a sculpture like that is that you can never get into every nook and cranny to sand the rust off. Which means there will always be rust present, and even after sanding and painting it, rust will eventually show through. So, with all that in mind, I would just leave it as it is. Are you going to display it indoors, or outdoors? It could actually be a nice little outdoor garden decoration, which in that case should probably just stay like it is.

I originally got it for the yard. And you see exactly what I mean about sanding. It would be one long and tedious task. Lots of nooks and crannies that would be just about impossible to reach to sand. I'm thinking Ms. Rustie will just about have to be happy in the yard. Although she would be a cool centerpiece for my island in the kitchen!

@kareng Even if you don't sand it, you can still spray paint it with Rustoleum paint if you want to. The Rustoleum will hold for quite a while.

And no feeding and watering! I think I will keep her right there in the back of the house instead of out by the chicken coops like I originally thought.

Give "Rustie" a paint job since the chicken would look more colorful with a light color on the metal parts.

I'm just figuring that it will be one or two afternoons of sanding and maybe even more. And with the cold, I don't see that happening. We will see.

@Deepizzaguy I am sure it would look great painted but I don't have the time to do that right now and wouldn't if I did with the cold weather. We will see what happens in the spring. That would be the first time I'd make the time to do it.

@andriaperry Cool! I hadn't really thought about colors. I just had to throw the Purple and Gold gout there. Since it is all loops, it is going to be different. Maybe a blend of colors. This will have to be a project for next spring, regardless.

@Janet357 I don't know if that would work or not. It's very humid here year round so rusting will come back sooner or later. I will leave her be right now since Winter is setting in.

Sanding and painting it will be a good idea. Besides, perhaps you can consider to put some lights around it so that it will be a nice decoration. Or planting something and letting it grow in this chicken and it will be also lovely.
