Working at Work

I have not shared much about my job, and still will not, not too much anyway. In working to find a best fit for people to work with different kiddos, my morning duties were changed for a while. I was not happy, but I am a team player. Well, last Tuesday the positions flip flopped again. I am back where I was. I prefer it, but I have lost some strength that this duty requires. So I am building back up. Honestly, the position I am in is not the one I planned for, and it is not the classroom I would prefer, but I am trying to tough it out. Again, it was a matter of the fact that I have the training for the Functional or Structured classroom, so they needed me to fill this position. It is more hours than I wanted, the work is heavier both mentally and physically, but yes, the hourly wage is also higher. So a lot of my days are now being spent doing physical activities with a kiddo that is in a wheelchair. Of course I do not just leave him sitting in a wheelchair. I move him in and out multiple times a day. You are gonna be jealous of my muscles.

I am just reading about strength training for helping to prevent or slow the onset of osteoporosis so possibly all your activity will be of benefit in the long run. I hope so.

Yep, this is why when I fall I bounce rather than break. All the walking is good as well.I am blessed to have strong bones, but I can tell you I have stronger muscles now as well.

@GardenGerty That's what I'll be working on - stronger muscles.

@JudyEv When I was younger, like in my forties, I muscled up very easily. Now it takes more effort.

I have done this with adults. The kiddo is easier, but not sure how much he really understands.

@much2say Like most of us, food is a serious motivator.

I am not sure what he is learning, but he is strengthening his body as well. He gets choices and I can tell when he enjoys some of the activities.

@GardenGerty I have friends that worked with kids with disabilities - I know it's not easy and certainly the right fit is very important. I hope it works out on both ends - you are qualified and seem to understand him in what gets him going.

I am lucky to have decent back and shoulders. My knees will give me some trouble.

I would really like to be independently wealthy and not work at all. Not gonna happen, though.

Yes, they are. I am stronger now than I was two years ago. Mowing in the summer and walking at school as well as the lifting make a big difference.

Taking care of anyone is. I like to think of how far he has come and wonder just where he will go.

I find it interesting what lands a child into a 'different' classroom than the average. Now if a kid has a tantrum, kid gets a label and starts paperwork. I wish you luck in your job.

One tantrum does not do it. These kids in this classroom have physical disabilities, and communication disorders as well.Yes, they may have tantrums, or more appropriately labeled as "melt downs". Communication is at the root of most of it. In the resource room a child has to have an individual educational plan (iep) to address defined deficits and provide goals to be attained. They only come for pull out in language arts or math. They get in classroom support for social studies and science. Paras that go into the classrooms help all of the kids in groups.
