Burls, jarrah and wood-turning

I forgot the important part I wrote about the friendly guy we met with the scruffy beard and tattoos. It seems his profession now is as a wood-turner but he specialises in creating really large pieces which he displays in galleries in the south-west of Western Australia. We have a lot art galleries and wineries in this region and many display various artistic works. He told us he had built his own lathe which will take timbers up to 4 tons in weight, 2 ½ metres high and 2 metres diameter. That is a huge log. He also turns ‘burls’. A ‘burl’ is a growth on a tree that is a reaction to an irritation of some sort. Wood-turners like to saw off the burl and turn it on a lathe to create a bowl or a coffee table or somesuch. Here is a link to an urn that he has made: https://www.yallingupgalleries.com.au/artists/ArtistDetail.asp?WorksID=13419&artist=Barry%20Chambers I can’t believe I forgot to tell you this first time around. The photo is of a small burl on a eucalypt. Mostly they are higher and on one side of the trunk so they are more easily removed. And a jarrah is just of the eucalypt varieties found here.

@bunnybon7 Some of them get some funny bumps and knobs. This one has quite a twist.

It does look interesting. Do these burls kill the trees?

It's such a shame to cut down mature trees @JudyEv those are the ones that benefit our planet the most.

No, they don't kill the trees. It's more like a scab I guess to protect the tree from whatever bug is irritating it.

@rebelann Taking the burl wouldn't harm the tree.

Wood working amazes and fascinates me. I love burl art. Have you heart of spalting? I have an old bureau that shows the grain of wood that it is made of.

@sallypup I'm not sure what you mean. They're salt and pepper shakers, if that's what you're asking. I think they are exquisite too. The sort of thing you can't resist.

Jarrah is very heavy. It must be quite difficult to create these big pieces.

So true. Did you see the salt and pepper shakers photo under Lenore's response? The dark markings in the Tasmanian sassafras comes from a fungus infection. This is another example of the pretty timber.

Your timing on this post is impeccable! I was at a big art festival yesterday, and came across a vendor selling wooden bowls and such. I was fascinated with the designs and the fine detail in his craftsmanship. He had a little bit of informational materials at his booth that explained his craft. This was the first time I had heard about wood turning. And then I open up myLot this morning and see your post about wood turning! It's all quite fascinating if you ask me!

@JudyEv Wow, that's beautiful! I don't own anything that's been turned from wood. And I'm surprised my dad never did either, considering how much he loved working with wood!

What a coincidence. It's funny how these things happen but it's usually in threes. I wonder if wood turning will turn up again some time soon in your life. This is something my Dad turned from the wood of a banksia.
