Guess it's back to cheap this and cheaper that!

I have always been a frugal shopper. I watch the sale ads, buy store brands when I can, and sometimes use coupons to save a penny or two. Now that I have retired, I have a lot less money to work with. I really have to watch what I spend. Today I bought Aldi brand coffee, even though it wasn't their cheapo stuff, it was not what I usually buy. It is about .50 cents less than my regular name brand coffee though. Hoping that the coffee is palatable so I don't regret purchasing it. I prefer Folgers Black Silk. I still have coffee pods for my single cup maker. My husband drinks a potful of coffee everyday. Hope he doesn't mind the change. How cheap will you go to save a penny or two?

There are a few items that are store brand that we like, and they are significantly lower in cost. I wouldn't be able to cut back on my coffee, we drink Maxwell House and we both really enjoy it. I only shop at a couple of stores because you get money towards your groceries with a points card, that helps me save a lot of money.

I shop between 3 stores. I know who has the best price on what I buy. Have to keep on top of that. Thankfully they are all located close together so I don't need to drive a long way to get to them.

I have always been frugal too, but there are some things that I cannot eat that are cheaper. Then there are things that I actually prefer that are cheaper.

I won't buy store brand cookies. They are not very good. My preference is homemade.

@dfollin I don't mind store brand cereals. Some are so much cheaper than the name brands that you can't pass them up. I have been buying Jif with her WIC benefits. For baking I buy Aldi brand peanut butter.

@ElusiveButterfly Some of the store brands taste the same as the brand name cereals We got cereal with WIC , but that was 30 some years ago. Can you still get it? There was only certain kinds we could get tho.

We are pretty frugal about a lot of things--and I cook from scratch most days--this week I am trying to "eat out of the cupboard" as we had a lot of stuff in the pantry and kitchen and it is a tough week

We are going to be eating from the cupboard with the exception of having to replenish milk, bread, and half n half. We have plenty of venison and moose in the freezer to last us for at least 2 months. I do need to shop for Thanksgiving today. Turkeys are .39 a pound at Hannaford. I'll skip over to Aldi for my celery, carrots, eggs, and potatoes.

@divalounger my sister bought a turkey for me. So after we get back from having dinner with my mother at the nursing home, I'll come home and toss our bird in the oven. Will only be 4 people here for dinner so I am really keeping it simple.

I buy reduced meat and fruits and veggies on the stand. I will buy day-old bread too. Coffee is something I don't like to play around with I like Caribou and Green Mountain. But on occasion, I will buy something else if it is irresistibly cheap. That is why I am writing my brains out, so I can have my little luxuries.

@BelleStarr I shop at Hannaford quite a bit, and that is where I mainly get my meats. They usually have some great deals on markdown meats.

I have a coffee maker that is both a single cup and brews a full pot too. I buy the Great Value French Roast coffee pods for myself. But also buy a 12 ounce container of coffee to make a pot for my husband to take with him hunting or to work. I buy discounted vegetables and meats if they look good and are not past the date. If the sell by date is the next day or the same day, I have no problems buying it if I use it or freeze it immediately.

@ElusiveButterfly That is the discount meat I buy as well, usually it is that day so it has to be cooked right away or frozen but when it is between $1 and $5 off, I'm all in.

My hubby has been rolling his own cigs, wish he would/could quit altogether, but that is not happening. He will what he needs though without thinking of comparing prices. However, when it comes to auto parts he will look for the best price. Parts are so expensive.

@ElusiveButterfly i hear ya'n the smokes. this'un'll not quit either. spendy habit fer certain, rollin' yer own 'r not. the taxes 're ridiculous'n 'em. this'un jest purchases willy-nilly. no thought to cost more oft'n not. buys unnecessary thingies quite oft, too. infuriates me to no end, his wastefulness.

I tend to only buy things when they're on sale and it's a bonus if I have a coupon for something, but I don't get many coupons for things I actually buy. I always check the "reduced" racks, too.

Love the "reduced" racks! Have found some really good buys there. Once picked up a huge bag of pinto beans for .50 cents!!! That's a lot of soup for pennies!

Love their Great Value coffee pods. I use the French Roast and it is great! Also have bought the bags of Great Value French Roast and enjoy it too.

Sometimes cheap is a good thing but I always make sure that if it's clothing that the cheap brand will be as long lasting as the higher priced items, it's not really cheap if you have to replace an item more often.

I look at how the item is constructed, the quality of the material as well. However I tend to shop more at second hand stores. I recently bought a bunch of warm clothes for Little Miss for less than $20.

@rebelann the second hand store where I get clothes for Little Miss always has tags. Wish I could find a place to buy my own clothes that are a bargain.

Due to my skin allergies I stay away from those, all too often there are no tags on the clothes they have to offer @ElusiveButterfly

I try to buy markdown items as well. I found 2 shirts for Little Miss for .59 cents each. They were Halloween themed, but she loves them.

I'm always looking for ways to save money and those pennies add up. I do like Aldi brand but haven't tried their coffee. Maybe your husband won't notice the difference in the brand? I've been getting my coffee at Sams Club lately which is a savings for me. I get a huge container of coffee and this week Folgers was on sale for $6.99

There is no Sam's club near me. Dang nabbit. Wish there were. My husband hasn't noticed the difference in the coffee. Thankful for that.

@Marilynda1225 we have neither near us. We would have to travel nearly 90 minutes for a Sam's club, and 3 hours for Costco.

@ElusiveButterfly at least the Aldi brand seems like it's a hit especially if it's cheaper. Costco has those same huge Folgers as Sams Club but don't know if you have one near you.

I was buying more expensive toilet paper and found that I was going through it way too fast. Now that I have switched I use less. Don't like the cheap stuff though.

@JudyEv I just purchased a product similar to Scott tissue. It does last longer, but it isn't as soft as I'd like it to be.

@ElusiveButterfly We don't like the cheap stuff. The problem for me is I can't remember which is good and which is bad but mostly if you pay a bit more, it seems better.

You have to take quality into consideration. It isn't worth saving a few cents for a less than satisfactory product. Cheaping out sometimes backfires.
