I Gotta Get Some Cheese

As cheap as I am it is a wonder I ever buy shredded cheese at all. It's so much cheaper to buy a brick of cheese and shred it yourself. But I suppose in my old age the convenience factor is worth the little premium.
Besides, if I am being totally honest and fair, I AM a rather thrifty shopper and when it comes to buying shredded cheese I generally don't pay THAT much for it.
But I am down to somewhere around 2 bags of shredded cheese and being that we are in the casserole and soup season we tend to use quite a bit more of that—during the summertime most of our shredded cheese is relegated to salads.
So, I gotta get some cheese!
I can usually get it on sale for well under $2 per 8 ounce bag, and so I will start having to look for some specials on it. I usually don't ever let it get this low, but here we are.
Believe it or not, it is not unusual for me to have about 20 bags of shredded cheese in the freezer. And when it is on sale it is not unusual for me to stock it up big time.
Do you use shredded cheese?

I usually buy shredded cheese for the convenience factor...even if it is most of the time more costly. Also, the shredded cheese has carbs from ingredients that keep it from sticking together, so for health I should shred it myself.

@MommyOfEli2013 Oh hell. For a buck I'd have bought as many as I could. They would not go to waste, let me tell you.

@porwest Most don't really worry about the carbs, but I do since when I am sticking to my diet I only have 20 net carbs a day and I don't want to use it all on the cheese lol.
That sounds like a good price....I would have bought quite a few too. I think a few months ago we had a deal where we could get an 10 bags for $10, 8 oz bags of course. I only bought 2 but I should have stocked up!

@renicemae I use cheese in casseroles, toppings for soups, on baked potatoes, on sandwiches, on pizza, in chili, and a number of other things. Cheese is universal and delicious. AND I like to eat cheese by itself, or added to a piece of salami. You cannot go wrong with cheese in my house.

I don't know how many grams. I guess I could look at the package. But they are 8 ounce packages. I DO like Cheese actually. lol. But of course most if it winds up in the freezer until we need some of it for soups, casseroles, salads, or some other dish we might use it for.

I get it about the preservatives and the anti-clumping stuff, but nowadays it is so difficult to avoid any of that. As for keeping, I always freeze mine until I am ready to use it, and it usually lasts about a week and a half or so after I open it if I do not use the whole package, which I rarely do.

Yes. I love melted cheese. It should be a food group. Those packages are cool because they come in all types of combinations...pizza cheese, etc.

It is awesome when our local grocery store, Schnuck's, has their store brand on sale. My wife works for a large hospital these days, but she still occasionally works part time for Schnuck's in the pharmacy—she used to be full time there before taking the job at the hospital—and so she still enjoys a 10% discount. So, when their shredded cheese goes on sale for about $1.79 per pack we actually get them for $1.61 each and we stock up.

I shred my own.I use mostly Italian cheese which I know that does not have any filler.
What is the life span in the freezer there?

I do buy the shredded cheddar, but blocks of pepperjack. I do freeze it sometimes, too.

I would actually buy shredded cheese because I have no patience shredding it myself. It would be helpful. I’m not sure if that’s available here in my country.

Just as an FYI, I got four 50 cent coupons off of any cheese item from Sargento. Not sure if you use coupons, but if you do you can contact sargento and rave about what you like about them and they'll send you those exact coupons.
I have a kraft shredder here somewhere. It is a shredder that has a bowl underneath it and a lid so I can just shred cheese and then use it throughout the week.
