Saved By A Stroke of Pure Luck

In preparing to get dressed to go over to my sister and brother-in-law's place for Christmas festivities, my wife asked me to help her put on a necklace. Of course it was one of those gotawful tiny clasp ones. I struggled to see it and get my fingers to work it right and finally got it. "Is it done?" she asked. "Yep," I said. She turned and I said, "That's a pretty necklace. Where'd you get that?" "Someone gave it to me," she said. "It's my birthstone." "Oh, your side fling?" I asked. "Jeez, I don't even know what your birthstone is." She looked at me incredulously, her smile turning into a scowl. "Are you serious?" she said. I hesitated. I tried to hide the sweat beads already taking formation on my forehead. "Amethyst." I said and swallowed hard. She smiled and said, "I love you," and walked away. As for me IT WAS A GUESS! It was just the first stone that came to my mind. Holy smokes that was a close one! Saved by a stroke of pure luck. In all honesty I am sure I KNEW it was in fact amethyst. That MUST be why that's the stone that came to mind. Either way, I am not sure I want to think about what might have happened if I'd have said topaz.

@GardenGerty Yes, I figured she wasn't wanting to argue over it or she found him humorous.

I really expected this story to turn out that you had given her the necklace and forgotten.

I'm glad you lucked out with your answer. Now, you should make certain her birthstone is amethyst.

If you had said 'Topaz' she would have smiled and said "I Love You." Your wife understands you. Merry Christmas Jim.

I applaud your optimism. I think she would have clobbered me with one of those deadly Dr. Scholl's wooden clogs. She does not have a pair by the way. But she'd have gone out and BOUGHT a pair just to clobber me with them.

cute. most men don't remember our birth days. I was married 5 times and only had one remembered and that's cause his mom had the same day. (not year) though.

I don't believe in luck. But if I did, I'd say you won the luck lottery today. You've got a good wife. Hope y'all had a great Christmas!

We had a fantastic Christmas, and the fact that I survived to tell the tale is something.

Have you read about what Clytemnestra did to Agamemnon? I'd say this was a close call.
