Put $1 in a jar

United States
December 31, 2019 1:17pm CST
I saw this on facebook. It said put $1.00 in a jar after every book you read. This could also go for people who prefer movies or television, or even radio and podcasts as well. It says at the end of the year you should take the money and go buy more books (movies, television shows...). I think that is a really cool idea except for one thing. Sometimes I'll have read two or three books in a week. That's 12 dollars a month that could go to something else, like my bills. Still a cool idea, and so I thought I would share here. What's your favorite entertainment medium? Books? Movies? Television? Radio? What's your go to snack to have with it?

I don't have a dollar to put in jars. I put most of my loose change in a piggy bank and donate it to an orphan home that our church helps support.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I donate to some charities monthly. I do the local air ambulance and the Blind.

I don't carry money very often, I prefer to use my debit card. Money going to an orphan home is a wonderful way to spend loose change.

@sprite1950 Oh that is great. I haven't donated in awhile, but when I was working I had some taken out of my paycheck to go towards the charity each week.

I like the idea, and I actually force myself to save money in many ways. I am sure you could scrounge up this knd of money and not miss it. But I would not put it toward buying more books. I'd put it in the bank.

@porwest No, I understand that you aren't trying to come off in an incompassionate way at all. It's not like I haven't been taught how to save my whole life. It's been drilled into me and still is, It's just up to me to get my self in gear and actually start taking it serious and saving again. I know that I shouldn't, and can't really rely on government assistance or the social security of the future... Not that I believe it will ever go broke, I don't believe that fund will ever go broke like some people believe.

I know that I really should be saving more in the bank. I used to be really good with that and then I ended up having to use a lot of what I saved towards medical bills and then just towards the insurance. I was paying $400 per month for a year and that was about what I was making per month where I worked. It was horrible.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah. It can be tough. It does take some know how. I suppose sometimes I am a bit complacent about it since I have never had trouble saving. It makes me seem incompassionate sometimes. But I do try to write about how to do it as often as I can. If I can help one person...

I don't read many books but I do like movies. The only problem I would have is all my change goes on my granddaughter for school! A pound here and a pound there, I never seem to have any change.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes school uniforms cost a fortune becaue they keep growing out of them. They do run a second hand uniform sale now and then and you can get some nearly new stuff quite cheaply

@sprite1950 Well that's good, I am glad that they run these types of sales. I wonder if there are swap groups on facebook for uniforms in your area?

I am sure that the cost of school uniforms every year can really add up. That on top of school supplies, school pictures, field trips.. It adds up quickly.

Even just one single dollar can go a long way with buying books here. Libraries have sales, and there are thrift stores with very good prices on books. Is it the same in New Zealand?

@valmnz I have started to borrow library books myself. At the moment I am just borrowing the books via the e-library. I have found this gets me in trouble because I have found several books that I want to own.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ys, we have a big annual secondhand book sale in my city, but plenty of other places sell cheap books too. I try and restrict most of my reading to borrowing library books these days.

I've never heard of this but sounds interesting. Last year I read 43 books. That would give me $43. But it wouldn't be new money though as it's coming from my account. I've heard of putting a $1 in a jar every time you curse, or instead of spending money on lunch put that amount into a jar and that is how you save up.

I have heard of those ways to save as well. I really like the one I heard of last year wherein you save in increments of $2.00 for each week of the year. Of course this may start to get tougher as the weeks go by. I like that idea though, except perhaps in increments of 20 cents instead.

@lovebuglena yes, exactly like that. I saw it sometime last year, it was some sort of graph. I can't remember exactly how much you would save at the end of the year.

@ScribbledAdNauseum How does that work? Like one week you put away $2 and the next $4 and the next $6...?

If I did that, I could pay for Christmas, food and all, by the end of the year. I think it would be quarters or half dollars for me. A dollar seems like too much, as much as I read. It's a great idea, though.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I might try it at a quarter and see how it goes. I can't think of a reason not to.

Same here, it would be far too much money if I was giving $1.00. I don't know if I'll do this, but if I do it will be 50 cents at first and then maybe down to a quarter after awhile.

@peavey Right. It doesn't hurt to try. If a person can't save once or twice then that's fine too. Plus, it can always be used towards bills / emergency.

It would be nice to save $1.00 per movie you see, whether it be on t.v. or in a theater, and then at the end of the year treat yourself to a movie in the theater.

It's a cute idea though. Maybe you can limit yourself to how much you put into the jar per week or month.

I was thinking that if I were to do this I might start off with $1.00 then move to just doing 50 cents and then to just 25 cents. Last year I saw this chart about saving and it talked about saving two pennies the first week of the year, then four pennies, then six pennies...

It's so customizable too. You don't have to do $1.00, it can be 50 cents or even less than that.

Maybe do it with quarters. I've started giving she child a quarter for every load of laundry that she helps with

31 Dec 19
Yeah, I was thinking about doing it with quarters, giving myself 50 cents instead of the dollar. I would probably use it for gifts or for vacation instead of for books though, atleast not have all of it be spent on books.

I like a good movie or a tv series. No snacks. Usually cats in my lap.
• United States
31 Dec 19
Cats in the lap are the best. A couple of months ago I was petsiting for my friend and one of her dogs was just crying out. I would tell him to come to me and pet him but he'd go back to his bed and start whining again. I eventually gave in and let him on the couch with me. He quieted right down and took a nap while I watch Sherlock Holmes. He's not allowed on the couch but he gets away with it from time to time.

Television and sometimes radio especially on weekends. I get updates on local news through the radio.

@florelway I use the noise of the fan to help lull me to sleep. Noise from the television or radio will keep me awake as I want to know what is being said. However, if it is boring or the presenter is using a monotone, then I will get very sleepy. It used to be that music would just put me to sleep, but not anymore.

I probably wouldn't be able to afford my book habit if I had to put a $1 in a jar for every one I read. Lately I've been trying to read the books I have downloaded on my Kindle or borrow from the library so I don't spend any new money on books. I generally don't snack while I read but my tv snack is usually popcorn or ice cream.
• United States
1 Jan 20
Popcorn and Ice cream are both good snacks for watching tv. I do the same with an occasional bowl of chips thrown in. I am thinking of rejoining kindle unlimited because I enjoyed it a few years ago when I had it. Also, It will allow me to read a lot more. I already borrow e-books from the library and want to continue that as well. The problem with that is that I've already found a few books I'd like to own as I'd like to re-read them.

or it could go towards your jewelry making as well. For every bracelet you complete you can add $1.00 or even just 50 cents to a jar and then at the end of the year you could spend it on more jewelry supplies or on something completely different.
