Real fish and unreal fish

I posted a collage recently of a jigsaw and a painting of a cow, each of which reminded me of the other. While staying with friends over New Year, we had barbecued fish for New Year’s Eve.
The next day, we had lunch at a winery; the same place where I saw the painting of the cow. Next to the cow painting were of several of fish so I took a photo of them too.
I’m not a great lover of home-cooked fish and always worry about getting a bone stuck in my throat but I did enjoy my meal on New Year's Eve.
Do you eat a lot of fish? It is very expensive here but I often order it if we eat out.

My breakfast today if fried rice with spicy fish from the jar. It was a gift to my for the holiday season. The milkfish was preserved and the bones were soft that it is meant to be eaten. Nice one, I'd say.

I like dried fish best but now days it comes half dried, so I stopped buying half dried sardines. I still have my other fish I like that's the same, like a Japanese one MirinBoshi...another sardine fish all cleaned and prepared to just warm up and eat everything but the tail. I buy them packaged and it's like the original ones I ate when I was a child, soooo good. I buy prepared saba an oily fish, at Marukai and their prepared cooked rice and eat them when I like fish too. I especially like the miso grilled saba, a half fish with miso marinade. It's cheaper so like you I buy my fish to eat. Nice pics.

@hereandthere I think that is bisugo. Maya maya has a much darker tone

What kind of fish is in the top photo? The painting is actually very pretty. We eat a lot of fish, usually from our pond and mostly bream, perch, bass, and sometimes catfish. It's so good when it's fresh like that.

My son buys bags of frozen tilapia. That's pretty much the only fish I eat these days. But years ago when my late husband used to go fishing in Key West, Florida, I could enjoy red snapper, yellow tail, grouper, etc. Those were the good old days.

@JudyEv - When I lived in Miami, there was a restaurant right next to my job and on Fridays they would have a lobster lunch special. A bunch of us at work would often go there. It was fabulous!

We will have salmon steaks, I like those and where I get them we have never been bothered by any bones.
Our son's mother-in-law has us in on Christmas Eve for a traditional Polish meal, which features a few different kinds of fish. I love that meal, she does an amazing job preparing the fish, of course she grew up on the sea so she ate a lot of it while living there.

I think perhaps the bigger fish are easier to fillet. I quite like salmon steaks too.

@judyev I too worry about bones. I’m scared of shell fish but I love a nice plate of calamari with a well-chilled Chablis. I’m also partial to a darne of salmon, but so many places get it not quite right and I do like it with a decent though not over-powering red, something some inadequate sommeliers sniff at. A rather good take on fish is tandoori muchly (Sea Bass). Sea food does tend to be pricey. Oh and anchovies, let’s not forget them.

How can fish be expensive there when you live right by the ocean? In fact, your whole country is surrounded by ocean! haha
We have fish of all types in abundance here in Florida, and most of it is reasonably priced. There are some varieties of fish that can get a little pricey, but that's just because of supply and demand.

@JudyEv That could explain it. But I would have thought that with you being so close to many Asian countries, that they would flood your markets with inexpensive fish.

@moffittjc All the prawns are from Asia. I'm not sure about other fish. Possibly there are tariffs on it to protect our own fishermen.

Yes, I love fish but stay away from the species with tiny bones. Flounder, tilapia and grouper are favorites of mine. Fish on the Barbie sounds delicious

Your post actually reminded me of a dream I had forgotten until now, I dreamt that I was at like a reunion and there was fish, no one warned me that the fish still had the spines and I remember the feeling of having to chew the bones and being afraid of not pulverizing them enough.
I was scared of choking, idk why in the dream I didin't bother to pick the bones out.

I will have to post our new piece of artwork sometime.
We love fish and seafood, and usually eat the fresh catch of the day in restaurants. I’m not a very good fish cook, unless it’s cod or Alaskan salmon. We always get ours filleted. Haven’t seen a bone in years.
Glad you enjoyed your New Year’s Eve dinner.
