My afternoon snack today

In the picture is a slice of special rice cake with mongo which is called Kalamay. The white one is called Nilupak which is mashed boiled cassava. Simple and native snack foods are sometimes better to eat than hamburger and pizza.

You are absolutely right. I never eat burgers. Home cooked food is much better for you as you know exactly how it was prepared and what is in it. Enjoy!

The burger in the fast food is considered junk food.

@Alexandoy I am glad that we do not have many foreign fast food here. People love to have the traditional food.

@LadyDuck that is nice because the country is trying to defend the native foods against the foreign foods. But here it is the opposite. The fast food outlets are lording it over in towns and in cities. Even in a faraway rural province, I was surprised that people are patronizing the fast food and had almost forgotten their native food.

I actually miss our native snacks because of the foreign food from the fast food outlets - burgers and fries, pizza, etc.

I'll show you later what I have for snack this afternoon. It's been quite a time that I haven't eaten nilupak, niluyang, or nilusak. There were ambulant vendors selling in the neighborhood but I'm afraid how it is prepared. I want to do it my own but my mortar and pestle are enough only for spices.

you would need a lusong to pound it

I already tried once but it is not Nilupak but Minukmok which is the banana saba instead of cassava.

@hereandthere yes, I borrowed a bigger lusong to pound the boiled banana with grated coconut and sugar. It was not easy so I did not make one again, waheehee.

The native foods particularly the snack foods are surpassed by pizza and burgers in popularity that some even think they are already extinct.

The brown toppings is caramelized brown sugar in coconut milk. The violet part is a sticky mix from the glutinous rice.

Kalamay is a really sweet and nostalgic treat! I remember when i was a kid people do sell those. Unfortunately it's rare these days you see a lot of people selling such delicacies cos most young people go for Milk Tea and Cafe food., Thanks for your post!

If you remember kalamay that means you are my contemporary, waheehee. Kalamay was the term used for that but now that I am residing in a suburban town with the specialty but they call it Bibingka. I wonder why the confusing name.
