Original birth certificate

Yesterday I was going through some of my papers and I found my mum's original birth certificate. It made me quite nostalgic. She was born in 1925 so it was a bit faded and old but still in good condition. Considering she was 90 when she died it occurred to me that a simple piece of paper will outlive her by many years as I will pass it on to my daughter when I die. I also have my own birth certificate which I have kept safe but many people lose theirs and have to apply for a new one which costs quite a bit over here. Do you have your original birth certificate?

I applied to get copies of my own birth certificate as well as my daughter's. Then discovered my mom had put my original birth certificate into the photo album she placed all my baby pictures in. *shake my head* Birth certificates aren't too expensive here. I paid $10 for each of them. Hello! I was thinking about you and decided to see if you were here and having fun.

@DaddyEvil I get memory issues but mine are related to age. It is one of the big 0s at the end of this year. scary. . How is your health generally? So you did not want to move? I hope you have found somewhere nice to live where you can settle for good.

@sprite1950 Yeah, I haven't been on myLot much lately. (I think this is the first time I've been here in roughly three months but could be mistaken about that. I'm having memory issues again, so who knows...) Pretty and I were forced to move from the house we'd lived in for over 22 years, so we've been having a wonderful time getting everything situated to suit us at the new place.

Ugh! That reminds me that I need to dig through my files and pull out my original birth certificate. I have to renew my driver's license this May, and they are going to ask to see an original copy of my birth certificate. I hope I didn't lose the one I have, because it is a pain in the butt to have to apply to get a new copy. That is really nice that you still have her original birth certificate. When my mom passed away last April, my brother and I were going through all her stuff at her house and we found her first driver's license when she was 16 years old. Not sure why she kept it all those years, but it was fun looking through and finding old things from her boxes of files.

Yes we found all sorts of things when we went through mum's stuff. She still had a ration book that was issued at the end of WW2. Things were so much different back then. I will keep that always to remind myself how lucky we are to have what we want in the way of food.

@sprite1950 It’s crazy how much we take for granted nowadays, compared to the sacrifices generations before us had to make. By the way, look who popped in below to comment!

Yes, I have my original birth certificate but it is sad that the handwriting on it is not very legible. But my name is clear and also the date of birth.

Mine is still in perfect condition with the name of my parents written clearly. It takes me right back into my childhood and makes me remember what it was like to live with them.

@sprite1950 the writings on the birth certificate is a big issue for some. My eldest brother was named Al Cesinando but in the birth certificate it was Alfonso. It was only discovered when my brother entered high school that required the birth certificate.

@Alexandoy How could that happen. Here the parents go to register the birth and the certificate is drawn up in front of them.

Yes, I have it. And my parents and grandparents also have it. It is compulsory to keep them, otherwise you cannot apply for a state job, for example, you cannot renew your ID or your driving license, you cannot marry etc.

@sprite1950 We can use it, too, if I am correct. But when we need official papers to be done, we need the birth certificate.

@rappeter13 I can't remember the last time I had to show my birth certificate. I normally use my driving licence for ID but I'm sure there are instances where I would need it. I think I must have needed it to renew my passport.

We can also use our passport as a form of ID or out driving licence. It does not have to be a birth certificate.

1925 and still in good condition? That is amazing. I don't think my grand parents have kept their birth certificates. Even my aunt cannot see her original birth certificate and she is just 68

@sprite1950 I had to go through so many offices and sign so many paper to get a copy of mine. They do not release anymore the full copy of birth certificate "not to discriminate" those who are born from an "unknown father". Ridiculous!!!

I do still have my original birth certificate. We keep it in a lock box with other important documents, passports, and that sort of thing. I wonder if my mom still has hers. I would think she must. I'd have to ask her.

I was wanting to get a "special" ID at the Department of Motor Vehicles a few days ago The only birth certificate I had in the safe deposit box was a copy of it. I couldn't get that ID. I found out my uncle has my original birth certificate. My mother is supposed to be giving it back to me. I will be putting it in the safe deposit box. I have my mother's original birth certificate and a copy of my aunt's too.
