Do you pay any attention to Mardi Gras?

The American city of New Orleans LA is famous for holding a rather wild Mardi Gras celebration. I have been to New Orleans, but it was to present a paper at a conference, not "party."
Apparently the celebration involves "Fat Tusday," a day in which Catholics indulge before repenting and fasting. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'll do some more research and perhaps add to this post after music practice. I'm gone like a train, but will be back later.

I was in New Orleans new year's eve for a concert one year. We roamed the Quarter after the show until about 5 AM. First thing we did was go into a bar....and crash a wedding reception. My comment as we left: "anyone who has a wedding reception in the French Quarter on New Year's Eve deserves to have it crashed!"

@FourWalls Thank you! I was suffering from a "Scotch moment." I gotta find Jesus on my own.

I have been twice to New Orleans with my husband for a few days but not during Mardi Grass. Still, I loved the city. I was and still am, sad about all that was destroyed with the Katrina.

You are correct about Fat Tuesday that is ONLY the last day of Carnival, a time (not only 1 day) in which Catholics indulge before fasting for Lent.
Here Carnival is a big thing, it started on February 7th and ended the 25th, with many parades, music, floaters and free food.

@TheHorse Carnival is celebrated all over Europe, not only in Catholic countries. The Carnival in the different parts of Germany are pretty famous. There was also an attack last Sunday during a parade , a car deliberately hit the crowd, there are many injured.

The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic country but we don't have Mardi gras although we have festivities that would be considered good counterparts. " Ati-Atihan is celebrated everywhere in the archipelago. Here's a link to give you major festivals that are somewhat similar.
