Foods A-Z - A is for Almonds

The almond is a species of tree native to Iran and surrounding countries but grown widely elsewhere. Almonds are California's top agricultural export and are also the United States' largest specialty crop export. The almond is not a true nut but a seed. Almonds are mentioned as early as 1400 B.C. in the Bible's Book of Numbers: Aaron's rod blossomed and bore almonds. A handful of almonds contains approximately 162 calories, 14 grams of heart-healthy unsaturated fat and 6 grams of protein. Almonds are sometimes associated with weddings (have you ever received a few candy-coated almonds as a favor at a wedding?) and are a sign of fertility. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I must be extremely fertile, because I snack on almonds all day long. Plus, being lactose intolerant, I also drink almond milk as a substitute for regular milk.

@LindaOHio I used to drink a lot of soy too, but there's health concerns (especially in men) because soy contains very high levels of estrogen. I usually try to balance it out now between soy, almond and coconut milk.

@moffittjc I can't remember the last time I made pudding or something like that; so it's not a big deal for me.

I love almonds. Can’t eat too many because of my diverticulosis, but I do love them.

I workd my way backwards from the Letter Z. Almond is a great pick for the letter A. It is one of my favorite nuts. The other favorite is cashew nuts. This food series was fun! Thoroughly enjoyed it!

@LindaOHio I am Italian too, I was born in Italy and I have lived in Italy until I was 25. Now they use the "confetti" also for other special celebrations, like the Doctorate, those are not white but red. All my family and relatives still live in Italy.

@LadyDuck I wasn't born there; but both of my parents were; so I consider myself Italian-American.

I didn't know almonds were a seed. They always make me cough so I don't eat them very often.

My mother in law gave me bunch of dry fruits including almond after our wedding. That time I don't understand why she do it. Now I do :D

Oh. I have never thought that almond seed is a native in Iran. I always thought that it is from the west coz as you said US exports it the largest.
