Vouchers given out in our old hometown

My husband and I both grew up in the wheatbelt town of Narrogin in Western Australia although we went to different schools. We haven’t lived there since our childhood although we’ve often visited my parents and other relatives who lived in the area. Because local businesses are suffering so badly because of the coronavirus, the Shire Council (local government agency) has come up with the idea of giving over 3,000 citizens vouchers for $A50. This has to be spent at locally before the end of August. A representative said that, because the Shire has had to cancel various events, it has some funds which it can use in this way to provide a little relief. It sounds a great idea to me, even if the amount isn’t huge. Maybe other areas will be able to do something similar to help their own local people. The photo is of the old shed that stood on my parents' property.

Sounds like a good idea, but I’m planning on keeping away from all shops and stores for a long time.

That is wonderful for those residents. I just saw in my bank account that my stimulus check arrived. Now I can buy a new stove.

@JudyEv mines about 80 years old. The door is broken but I’ve used it like that for over 10 years. The temperature gauge is what broke now so I have to give in and get a new one.

@shaggin My Mum cooked on a wood stove nearly all her life. I don't know how she gauged how much wood to put in to get the heat she needed.

Mum always expected the next big storm to blow it over but it's still standing. I love the use of the big 'Y' timbers as uprights.

@judyev That's an excellent idea. Here vouchers have been given to families who normally qualify for free school meanls because of poverty. The idea is that supermarkets will accept the vouchers as payment for food, but there has been a big hiccup and the self service tills have not been programmed to accept the vouchers so people trying to use them are refused and have to go away empty handed - how humiliating is that?

That would be awful. I would be so embarrassed in their situation. The powers-that-be really should try to think these things through properly.

I find those old sheds fascinating, I love them. I think that giving an amount to spend in local business is a great idea and I am going to suggest this to our Mayor. They also have cancelled many events, they have money to spend.

Once businesses are all open again, we plan on spending any money to local businesses who have suffered the worst.

I also think it shows that the local government cares about the locals. It's quite likely that other local councils will do it for their constituents.

I haven't heard any feedback on the handouts. I can remember Dad going into the bush and looking for a tree with the 'Y' shape to make the uprights for a new shed. I think it is beautiful too.
