Have you ever used objects you have around your home as decorations that were never meant to be used as decorations? These jars once held scented candles. After burning the candles, Pretty and I cleaned out the jars and stored them, thinking we might find a use for them some day. Some of you know we moved several months ago. When we discussed moving into this house we couldn't figure out what to display on all the shelves built between the kitchen/dining room and the living room... On some of the shelves we have things we had on display in our other house. Some of the things on display are wine glasses used by my parents when they got married, a gourd instrument a friend made while he was a missionary in the wilds of Peru and some small figurines that have sentimental value to both of us. We still had one shelf that looked strange since we had nothing small enough to fit on it until I realized we could use scented gel beads in some of the candle jars as a decoration. What do you think of our cheap decorations? Are these something you might add to a display in your home?

Those beads are pretty. Do you open one jar now and then to add a scent to the room?

Thank you. Oh, heck no! The colors are all very pretty but the scents many of them have are very regrettable! I swear, whoever decided on the scents they use in some of those beads really need to have their sense of smell checked! I've carefully sealed all of those jars so they will last as long as I want the decorations and so I am not forced to get a whiff of any of them. (There are four, possibly five, of their scents that Pretty and I like. There are six, I believe, of them we can't stand! One of the scents is so bad, in our opinions, I pitched the container I bought without daring to add that one to my collection. *shake my head*)

@bunnybon7 We've been here almost a year and are still hunting for things we know we kept but still haven't found... We've given up and have been buying things we know we still own. *sigh* If you came to visit, that would give us another pair of eyes to point out the places we think we've looked but have obviously missed. Moving is such a pain!

I'm sorry, hon. I do understand. I bet the dolls and cups made your house feel special to you. This house is half the size of the one we left. We lived in that house for over 22 years. We had to do a lot of giving away before we even came close to fitting into this house. A lot of the stuff we did bring with us is stored in the garage of this house... but we gave truck loads of stuff to the charity places here.

@DaddyEvil I'm not into scents myself . . . I get a headache . Maybe if you leave all the jars open, the scents will be heavy enough that it would even scare any viruses away .

Thanks. I thought it was rather pretty, myself. I sealed all those jars. But if you want to come over Pretty and I will leave and let you open them all and see. Just make sure you seal them all back up and air out the house before we get back home.

@JudyEv The gel beads are actually made to be used as room air fresheners. As the gel scents the room the beads shrink until they are the size of a pinhead and need to be replaced. Some of the scents don't smell very nice, in Pretty and my opinion, of course. (I have ask the opinions of some of my friends who have come over and they didn't like the ones Pretty and I disliked, either.) One scent is called "Pine Forest". When I was a kid on the farm we had three different types of pine trees. I always liked their scent(s). "Pine Forest" doesn't smell like any of those trees and I'm very happy we didn't have that kind of pine tree on our land!

I don't think I would want to decorate this way because it's to colorful to me. Definitely takes up the empty space and adds color! I didn't see any of your recent posts so I didn't realize you moved. I'll pop back through some older posts of yours to see what I've missed.

@DaddyEvil I’d have to chose like one or two colors to go with if I decorated with the scented beads. I assume you will open only one at a time for the scent to go through the room.

@shaggin I won't be opening any of those jars you see in the photo. Those are all different scents and I only like five of the ten. The five I don't like smell like uhm... poo to both Pretty and I. (I sealed the jars really well so no scent could leak out and threw away the remaining beads of the ones I disliked. The remaining beads from the ones I like I've been slowly using in the bathroom and our bedrooms here.)

Too colorful for you? I'd think, with your beautiful red hair, that you'd be into everything colorful! Pretty and I both love color. The window treatments in the living room and dining room are a dark green. Same in my bedroom. Pretty livened up her bedroom with maroon carpet and curtains. You should come visit for a while. We'll teach you how good bright colors can make you feel.

@DaddyEvil You have no idea how many old magazines, newspapers and stuff I threw when we moved from Monte Carlo (where we lived 31 years) to this house in Switzerland. Now it's time to go through all that stuff again and clean up a bit. I am sure we do not have another 31 years to live. I am sorry for the coins collection, this is something I did not throw, I checked everything first.

Thank you! Uhm... you wouldn't believe how many car loads of stuff I saved in our garage that Pretty threw away/donated when she packed for our move. (Unfortunately, she didn't bother to check all the boxes, though. I suspect she was simply tired of going through 22 years of things I'd felt we might need/want some day. One of the boxes that was hauled to a thrift store as a donation contained a collection of coins and their display mountings worth $1,500 USD. I still haven't told her about that loss. She was doing most of the packing since I was putting in 12 hour days at Walmart. Overall, it's a small loss.)

@LadyDuck Oh, I see... I never save newspapers or magazines. Those can draw roaches! Mostly, I save things I buy, use for a while and then pack away. (But only if they are still usable.) Sometimes, those things are small toys that catch my eye, I buy them, play with them a while and then they sit and draw dust. I love flying things. I have several different types of helicopters and "floating" (battery powered) flying disks. Every time I am asked to work in toys at Walmart I end up bringing home some new flying thing. Pretty rolls her eyes, takes them away from me for a few hours and then gives them back. I play with them a few months, show them to my friends, let them play with them and then stick them in the garage. I bought two of the coin collections. One of the collections I put into the picture frame they came with and had it hanging in our dining room. (I wanted to be able to see it but didn't want the collection in view from our living room since you never can tell who might see something like that and decide to steal it.) The second set I left in their original packing box and put it into the garage. When we finished moving I hung the first set in the hallway between our bedrooms and then went looking for the second set. (I was going to store them in my bedroom closet since the garage here doesn't and can't be locked.) I ask about the sealed box and she informed me that if it was still sealed after 15 years, we obviously didn't need it I simply agreed with her and went on.

Of course and great idea. I save things too to some degree but as I've gotten older I also am trying to eliminate more if I don't think I'll ever use it again. It's also nice to mix things up with the seasons it something.

I am something of a pack rat. If something is still usable, I keep it. When we were forced to move last November Pretty went thru everything we own. We donated two truckloads of furniture, as well as two carloads of clothing to a local thrift store. (Virtually everything we had stored in our garage at the old house was given away.) The garage at the new house has two lawn mowers, ramps for my car as well as outdoor tools and that is it.

Oh, thank you, Faye. The move was actually not voluntary. We rented our last house for over 22 years but the owner passed away and his family sold the house so we had to move. We really miss our old house. We moved in November so couldn't even take any of the plants I planted there. We're hoping the new owner will let us retrieve starts from my favorite ones, at least. We left a note on his door asking. He hasn't replied yet.

Green Stripe Bamboo. Photo is mine.
@FayeHazel Thanks... but things do tend to happen when we least expect it. *shrug* The new owner called last night and told me to come by this Saturday and he'll let me get starts from all my plants, so that's good! I really love the Green Stripe Bamboo and the Pampas Grass the most out of all the things we had planted there. Pretty had several kinds of mint plants she's hoping to retrieve Saturday, too. There is also a black fern a friend gave me a couple of years ago I'd like to get, too. Everything else will be missed but I can always replace them. (One sprig of the bamboo cost me $150. And now the bamboo "clump" is huge! I've had it for about 20 years. I'll post a photo of the bamboo in front of that house for you to see.)

@DaddyEvil Oh Im sorry to hear about the circumstances of your move. It is a pity. I hope this new place will be as much, if not more of a blessing to you. I also hope you are allowed to get some of the plants you put there. What were your favorites? If not maybe keeping an eye on your area's free listing on classifieds or marketplace? Seems like a lot of people with perennials like to thin them and give them away. I just got momma some Iris, Rhubarb, and Hostas

@mynameiskate Thank you... Anyone receiving a gift of one of those jars would have to promise never to open it. The five jars on the left have gel beads that smell delightful... the ones on the right uhm... DON'T! I can't imagine why that company produces gel beads that stink to high heaven but apparently their development team all had severe colds when they were judging the scents they were considering using!

@DaddyEvil I bought it for a candle. Only after I bought it did I realize it was a glass if I went to the work of removing all of the wax. Though it is isn't pretty glass and takes its place quietly on the shelf reminds me of the event. The jars on your shelf could be a present too. They are pretty.
