Well, my husband went to the other house after not going there for 8 months. The water has been shut off the whole time; and no heat was put on during the winter.
The basement was flooded again; and someone had broken in again and went through the house from basement to attic. This makes 3 times that someone has broken in.
The grass is really high; and my husband had gone to the house to talk to the guy next door to see if he would cut the grass. He has moved. We need to get that grass cut ASAP so that the insurance doesn't get cancelled again.
My husband finally agreed with me that we need to just sell the house to one of those people that buys for cash, take the loss and be done with it...but first we must get the house emptied out and the repairs done.
Sigh.

Yes, sometimes it's just better to cut your losses. Think of it as addition by subtraction. As they say time is money and it seems you don't have the necessary time to put into maintaining the house or property.

@LindaOHio You have to weigh the issues, is it better to just sell it as is and take the loss and not worry any longer about all you would have to do and the time spent on it. Isn't there a way at the end of the year when you do your taxes about taking the loss? I think that is what we did.

@ramapo17 We want to at least empty the house out and have the ceilings and wall fixed from the leaky roof. We had to replace the roof last year.

We might get a better price if we do the repairs.

The first time they took lawnmower batteries, etc. Now there's nothing really of value left.

Wow! Why do they keep breaking in? Is there stuff in the house worth taking?

@lovebuglena Yes; but we don't want to alert the insurance company to the fact that we are having break-ins. We are paying premium insurance for an empty house as it is ($1,600 a year).

Nope. Anything of value was taken the first time someone broke in.

There is a company that will come in for $1,300 (Based on the number of truckloads); and they will empty the whole house out and haul it all away.

@CarolDM Yup. They said that they would take care of the ceiling material that fell in, etc. too.

I think I would just sell it as is. Empty anything you want to keep and be done.

You will be better off taking a loss and have that man take care of everything and get rid of everything and that will be one less thing for you to deal with. We did that when we moved from Pennsylvania to Florida 5 years ago. We thought we could do it all our self and we ran out of time. We took a big loss on some of the things I had but we couldn't do everything.
Every so often I look around our home now and wonder where I would have ever put all the stuff I had. We still have a very small storage shed down the street but that is nothing compared to what we would have had to deal with.

We are living in the house I lived in with my parents before they bought a different house. It hasn't been remodeled since 1990s, aside from a few things here and there. My parents already had to spend money replacing the heating system, the water heater, the AC, the balcony and balcony sliding door, and the washing machine. There are other things that need to be fixed/replaced. Better to just sell the darn thing as they keep spending lots of money on it. But they can't do that until we figure out where hubby and I will move.
