Vegemite is a thick, dark brown Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract from breweries with some vegetable and spice additives. It is used as a spread for sandwiches, toast, crumpets or crackers as well as a filling for pastries. The flavor is salty, slightly bitter and malty with a flavor similar to beef bouillon. Vegemite is a rich source of Vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B9. In 1919, Mr. Callister, an employee of Fred Walker & Company, was given the job of developing a spread from the used yeast being dumped by breweries. Concentrating the clear liquid extract and blending it with salt, celery and onion extracts formed a sticky, black paste. Vegemite first appeared on the market in 1923. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Most Australians love Vegemite but it is a bit of a love or hate food.

From the sound of it, it doesn't sound very appetizing. Do you like it?

@LindaOHio Yes, I like it and our two boys had it in their lunch-time sandwiches for their entire school life. Every time I put something else in their sandwiches they'd ask for Vegemite again.

It doesn't sound like something I'd care for.

I’ll take my vitamins instead, and leave that for the Men At Work song.

No way. I saw Marmite in England many years ago and I refused to try it.
