Cultural Differences make the world go round!

I remember when we were in Thailand, we spent a lot of time soaking up the most amazing sun. The many Thai people that we hung out with asked us why? They stayed out of the sun. It was a cultural difference. I found this picture of my dad's that reminded of the Thai's telling us to carry umbrella's so we didn't get too much sun!

The Asians are right, but many I've met told me it was to keep from getting darker from the sun. My beauty doctor doesn't want me in the sun either. Terrific photo!

@DianneN Asian women don´t want to get more dark skin. They think that lighter skin complexion is more beautiful than dark one. That is the colonial mentality that was spread by the Spaniards in the Philippines. That is why they use whitening products. I love my brown skin. I do sunbathe as well. I am the exemption of the rule.

I know some Asian cultures think lighter skin is more appealing/beautiful - they stay out of the sun so as not to get dark skin. My parents are Asian but I was born and raised here - I love being under the sun .

@DocAndersen It used to feel strange when people did that here - walking around with umbrellas when there was no rain . . . but Asians have done that in their own countries. But I see more of that practice here now . . . but yah, I don't do it either

It is the same with people in my home country, Philippines. We always have umbrella with us to keep us from the heat of the sun and not to get burnt. Being in Germany, I always think to carry an umbrella when the weather is more than 30°C but I have no courage to do so. I don´t want to get attention from the Germans.

Many of the hispanic community are like that here as well. I don't overdo being in the sunshine but I can't just stay indoors all the time, that would be way too boring.

I'm not outside long enough to require a hat @DocAndersen usually I limit outdoor activity to no more than 30 minutes at a time so I tend to go in and out a lot.

Considering the damage the sun does to your skin I think the Thai folks were spot on. They probably knew all about the holes in the O-Zone layer.

When we were in the backblocks of Thailand all the young girls wanted to be as white as possible. They covered themselves with sunscreens plus wore hats, long sleeves, etc.

They are smart to stay out of the sun. We Americans worship the sun too much and get skin cancer.

nice photo. I used to love lying out in the sun. But not anymore. My mother, though, still loves to. I keep trying to tell her it's bad for her.

I remember once when I was playing a game of drafts, or checkers in another country once. I thought that the rules would be the same all over the Wolrd, but I was wrong. I lost, when my opponent moved his piece, in a way not allowed by English rules, and there was no way of arguing with him, in his country. I guess that each culture develops idiosyncratic ways of behaving, and this is because, besides their being individual differences, there are differences at the higher levels too, or of cultures, countries, and races. All must be able to stand as they are, for them to be accepted, and not biased against. Each culture must be respected, as much as we can do so.

it is always interesting - I learned darts in an English pub, in Malaysia. I came back tot the US after the project was done, and joined a darts league in the US. I had to relearn everything!
