Like most countries, Australia has its fair share of beautiful birds and the Major Mitchell cockatoo, also known as the pink or Leadbeater's cockatoo, is no exception. Its taxonomic name is Lophochroa leadbeateri. It is a medium-sized cockatoo with a length of 36cm (14 inches) with white and salmon-pink plumage and a large, bright, red and yellow crest. It was named in honour of Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, a surveyor and explorer of south-eastern Australia, who was a great admirer of the bird. They generally live in wooded habitats and lay their eggs in the bottoms of tree hollows. They travel in small groups and there is some hybridisations with pink and grey galahs. Cookie was a well-known and beloved Major Mitchell which lived at Brookfield Zoo, Chicago, Illinois from its opening in 1934 until dying 83 years later. No, most are further north. I think too they'd stay away from human habitation.

Our indigenous Australians don't seem to have used feathers are adornment, except perhaps for emu feathers.

Until the bird raises its crest, it just looks like white feathers. No wonder Major Mitchell was blown away by it.

They are just an ordinary white cocky until they raise that beautiful crest. Nearly as pretty is the sulphur-crested cockatoo. Photo courtesy Andrew Mercer ( / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)
