Dumber Than The Police Permit (1)

Before putting things into the washing machine I sometimes spray a liquid stain remover on them if need be. I used to have a certain brand, but last week I bought a different one. It's cheaper and I was glad to have found it. Why should I spend good money on a stain remover?
Yet, I couldn't use it. It's in a plastic bottle on top of which is screwed a nozzle with a trigger. On one side of the nozzle stands 'open', on the opposite one 'closed'. The idea is to turn the nozzle to 'open', then pull the trigger and spray the liquid on the stain.
I turned the nozzle to 'open' and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I tried it many times, always in vain. Obviously, I squeezed out some drops because the nozzle became moist. But that wasn't as it should be. I looked at the work-shy bottle for some days and then decided to take it back to the supermarket where I had bought it. The woman responsible for this branch hardly heard me out. She said at once, "No problem. We'll take it back." She told the shop-assistant at the till to look out for me when I'd come back with my trolley. The stain-remover would already be paid for.
I returned to the till with a different bottle. The first thing that saved me was that I didn't try to operate it. I handed it to the shop-assistant and said, "You check this bottle, please. I'll only take it if it works properly." She turned the nozzle to 'open'. Nothing happened. She looked closely at it and then *opened a small kind of door covering the opening*!
I hadn't noticed it! I'm usually very observant and only last month I got new glasses. How could I not have noticed this?
The second thing that saved me was that I didn't say anything. I have no explanation why I kept schtum**. I often exchange a sentence or two with the shop-assistants. They know me by sight because the supermarket is small and I go there several times a week. I'm surprised that an "Oh, I hadn't seen that." didn't escape my mouth. The woman would have considered me a Vollidiot (full idiot) and rightfully so.
I thanked her and slunk home to lick my wound and recover from the shock.

* This is what Germans say when someone does something really stupid.

**From the net, "This probably derives from the German word stumm meaning silent. The phrase 'keep schtum' (variously spelled 'keep stumm', 'keep shtoom', 'keep schtum' etc.) is British and fairly recent. It has the sound of a Yiddish phrase but it is more likely that it originated in the UK criminal community."

It happens, do not worry. My husband bought last week a portable DVD player, I do not know why he needs a "portable" as we watch all our movies in the living room, but well. He took it out of the box, spend a full hour reading the manual (I confess, I never do) and after a moment he called me and said "Well, everything is explained but NOT how to open it, it is a moment that I try, there is not a button to push... I bring it back". I looked at the "thing", turned it of 90 degrees and simply opened the top, like you do for the laptops. I was too happy.

I think they like to invent ways just to flummox us.
I often use the phrase 'keep schtum'. I thought it was German but didn't know it derived from criminals. Of which I have no association.

@MALUSE It was you that said it originated from British criminals albeit a quote from the net. Sorry, I should have kept schtum.

@MALUSE No worries. As long as you're writing them, even if you're not reading them and thinking that I was being a schmuck.

@Orson_Kart Indeedy. You're right. I should read my own posts more attentively.
My excuse is that I didn't sleep well and my brain doesn't function yet the way it should.
Do not keep schtum in future!

Things like that happen to the best of us but at least now you have a bottle that works

I think I would have kept schtum too not wanting to be thought of as being completely stupid. In the past they did not have these little doors on them you would just turn and squeeze but not only are they trying to make them child proof but also adult proof! You are not an idiot who would have known I and many others have probably done exactly the same as you!

Oops! I'm quite sure we've all done something similar. Definitely best to keep schtum.
Incidentally, I didn't realise this was a phrase unique to (British) English.I feel like I've always known it and what it means, and think most other English people would, even some of the younger ones. At least down here in the southern half. You would usually keep schtum because you don't want to be a tell-tale or a snitch, so it works better with more sinister and criminal or naughty things.

I was wondering if you had to remove a seal of some sort. We've struggled with a bottle of tomato sauce only to find we hadn't removed the seal.

I'm always in a hurry to do things; and I probably would miss something like that as well.

I've done things like that myself. It is usually my children that figure it out for me...and then proceed to never let me forget about my stupidity.

Those nozzle thing always beat me.
But the wont from here on in, all thanks to this post.
Shows how much I am missing my close up glasses.
Wish the optician would open soon
