Surprise! My Mums Are Already Blooming

I was very surprised to notice that all three of my pots of mums were full of blooms about a week ago. Mums are usually Fall flowers and don't bloom until September or so in our area. I was happy to see the blooming begin. Both my yellow mum and one of the purple mums are already blooming. I chose the purple and yellow (gold) for LSU. Geaux Tigers! Do you have any plants that are blooming at odd times? When do mums bloom in your area? © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved.

Commercial gardeners here manage to get their mums to bloom for Mothers' Day. They are very clever at doing this.

@kareng I've forgotten some details now but it involves using electric blankets to get the plants started at the right time.

@JudyEv So they create a fake environment with higher temperatures. That makes sense.

Your mums are beautiful, here in Switzerland they start to bloom in early March until April then they come back in Fall, late October through November.

These guys are obviously a little bit confused. Or else, Mother Nature is playing tricks on us again!

@LadyDuck Yep, for sure. Today I noticed an Amaryllis had shot out a tube with a bud. They have never bloomed in the middle of the summer here, only winter. What did you notice strange?

Very pretty... Mums won't bloom here until the middle of September. I keep waiting for my Gladiolas to bloom. It's possible they won't bloom at all this year since I only planted them this spring, but I'm still hoping.

@DaddyEvil Those will be pretty! The last ones I planted didn't come up. The bulbs were old. I hate when I find stuff like that and they are ruined.

Gladiolas and Oxalis. Photo is mine.
@kareng I planted my gladiolas behind Oxalis bulbs in the flower bed. I chose gladiolas that should be a red so dark it is almost black in color.

Of course! Can't have too many colors or flowers. However, you would have to put out some purple and golds!!!

@moffittjc Will be a nice array of colors. I don't think mums would mail very well but we could do that with lily bulbs. You have orange and I have yellow

We will see soon enough, that is if they have a full team without Covid-19. Last week there were 21 players that tested positive.

@kareng i think coach O gets a pass this year, a lot was lost from last year. Don't get me wrong they we'll be 10-2 but not in the final four is my prediction.

@DocAndersen We will see. I don't get the "inside" scoop anymore but it sounds like what I am hearing is that Brennon (sp?) is going to surprise us all.

That is the usual, although spring blooms are also noted. I've just never had any in the spring before until this year. So they are either late for spring blooming or early for fall blooming.

@Alexandoy Two of the three really blossomed into huge plants this year. The third one is lagging but it will come around. It was left in a smaller pot and most likely root bound.
