Trying to Find Great Contractors Takes Time

I have talked quite a lot on MyLot about our lake cottage in Pennsylvania. We own it with our daughter. We always counted on our late son-in-law for the minor repair that we needed. Now it is pretty much Kasey and I trying to get business done.
Three years ago we developed a leak in a hot water pipe from our hot water heater, which is in a small basement we have, to our bathroom. It is underground and most of the space between the heater and the bathroom is a crawl space since our house is on piers. I contacted a plumber to give us a price for the repair. I looked for some who came highly recommended.
The plumber gave me a price of $3600. He said it would take 2 men 2 days to do the job. Call me crazy, but this is a small home, it can't be 24 feet from the heater to the bathroom. The price seemed very excessive. So we didn't get it fixed and as a consequence, we turned off the water and didn't visit the cottage for 3 years.
Fast forward to this year, we no longer have our pool and we wanted to use the cottage again. I looked on the Internet to see if I could find someone to help us. I emailed and left message on several contractors. One in the town next to us called me back. He told me he no longer did plumbing but he offered to recommend a plumber to me and i also asked for an electrician.
I called the plumber he recommended and they said they would be at the cottage in a few days to give me a price. They came when they said they would and looked the job over and told me it would be about $700. They completed it that day and also did a few other pipe repairs and added a new toilet (our was leaking). The complete price $1325.
I also asked them for recommendations for a handyman and an electrical. we have other jobs we need to be done and I was so happy with the job they did.
This is the method I used in Florida, I asked our pest control man for a plumber and he gave me a recommendation which I was very happy with.

Thanks. In PA we did ask the neighbor but they were no help with recommendations. But now I feel much more confident we can get the jobs done that we need.

@BelleStarr No. R.C.C. slab is provided over toilet only. There is sufficient space between ceiling and loft slab where we can put water heater and can be used as storage space.

In this country, they are never placed above, always below and it is easy to access so that wasn't the issue. If it is in the ceiling if it springs a leak it will ruin the ceiling and cause a lot of damage.

Sometimes word of mouth recommendations by other professionals is the best way to go.

Yes at home that would work but we tried that at the cottage without success.

Oh it's wonderful to find one professional you trust and then be able to get other names from them. It's finding the one you can trust in the first place that can take awhile. So glad you've found someone. P.S. Love the photo, just beautiful!
