Okay, so I have never been one to go to the beauty parlor or shop much. I have had a professional dye job one time. Ditto the perm. I used to color my hair at home with some name brand product, then they discontinued my color. Kind of an auburn. So I got brave for a few years, and used henna. I have not done that in ages, but Amazon is a good source to have henna brought to my door. You guessed it. I am sitting here with a henna mud pack in my hair. In fact I learned about henna years ago here on the lot. The person mentioned that it was like putting a layer of shellac over the hair shaft. The first time I used it it came out very much like Woody Woodpecker--very orange/red. It is likely to do that today as well. What I like about henna: it conditions the hair and scalp, it coats the hair; personally I like the smell, very grassy, not chemicals. It calms down the frizziness. It is not too obvious when it grows out.It covers the gray. You can use it as often as you like. Every three days, and the color just gets deeper. So here I am, with a plastic bag over my hair mud pie. I should go mow today since I got distracted yesterday. It is going to get hot. I sunburned, doing a craft outside yesterday. Oh, well. Let's get this day started.

I gave up doing my own colour a couple of years ago. I used to use henna-enriched shampoo as a teenager and liked the auburn highlights that it pulled from my hair.

I have been gray striped for quite a while. I had it really short, too and that was cute. as fast as my hair grows I cannot afford to keep it cut. In the humidity I have very frizzy hair that is always framing my face. The henna will straighten some of that out.

Thanks for a bit of information about using henna. I had no idea how it was done.

It is ground up leaves and some people find it complicated and burdensome. It seems to last longer than a commercial product, though, so it is worth it to me.

Hubby likes how it looks when it is done. Not too many people use henna. You can mix different ground spices in it or other things to vary the shade. I have so much white and gray that it will be quite bright at first.

@wolfgirl569 It will be really bright at first but then it deepens. You can also buy ground indigo or amla to make it less coppery. Right now I am very bright. Hubby thinks it is beautiful.

My hair has a lot of natural red highlights in it. I never had to use henna.

@DianneN That is why I was a little surprised to read that you have natural red highlights. Anything that ever lightened my hair made it reddish though, so I thought maybe that was the case.

I have colored my hair off and on since I was a teen, just because. When I was younger you could see the red and gold more in my hair.

I think the brand of henna I bought this time is a higher quality than some I have had in the past.

When I dye my hair I always do it at home. Right now my hair is black/gray and red. Most of the red color is gone because I haven't dyed it for a long time. I have tried henna in the past. I would like to use it again.

Mine is definitely red today. It will settle out over the next few days. My husband thinks it is beautiful. I love how it feels. It has been four or five years since I have used straight henna.

Henna is not something I have used, but it sounds interesting. If I ever decide to change my color, I will look for Henna. We know they sell at least one product in a health food store here. It is nice to avoid chemicals when we can. Were you happy with the color?

For the moment it is brighter than I would choose, but it mellows out. Some henna products have metal salts in them that change the color. I am not sure how healthy that is. The very bright areas are where my hair was white. It will deepen and mellow.

I tried the henna once and my husband was horrified by the orange/red color the hair came out. Never again.

It calms down after a while, or if you mix Amla or Indigo it is quieter.

I have my hair dyed at the hairdresser's. It's done so well that many people fall for it and think that what they see is my natural hair colour.

Does you hair stay that orange/red color, or does the brightness of the color wash out or fade quickly? And are there different colors available?

Pure henna is red. You and put things like turmeric in to make it more gold, or indigo with the henna will turn more black. Amla will dull it down. I will shampoo my hair on Saturday and it will dull it some. It oxidizes and mellows out in about three days. The next time I apply it it will not be so bright as it will not have white or gray hair for a base. Years ago, the first Clairol I used turned the white and gray streaks a magenta color.

Ancient Egyptians discovered that this plant would color their hair. I am brilliantly red right now but within three days it will calm down. Where my hair was white or gray is what is very bright. It is a healthy, chemical free hair treatment. People in India use it a lot. You may be more familiar with henna tattoos, which last a long time and are often done on the hands.

It is actually an ancient herb. When my aunt played for the All American Redheads basketball team they all had to dye their hair red. I know she used henna. When my older sister was a teen she wanted to color her hair and mom would only let her use henna. Back then it came in cute metal cans.

You have to completely cover up when you are in the sun. Some people use cucumber, or lemon, or buttermilk to bleach their skin.
