How to spend ten minutes on a treadmill

First the backstory. Vince and I used to play in brass bands. In fact, we met through the brass band movement. Fast forward to the present. We’ve been trying to use our treadmill more regularly. Mostly we do ten minutes or so at a time. Vince has a leaking heart valve and starts to get chest pains if he overdoes the exertion. I have found I can read while I walk so I’m working my way through our Reader’s Digest magazines, most of which I haven’t read. I hold the handrail with one hand and the book in the other. I asked Vince if he is able to read while he walks but he says he can’t. What he does do is hum through the march Sussex by the Sea (twice with all repeats - this might only make sense to those who read sheet music) then once through Colonel Bogey and by then he’s done ten minutes. Whatever works I guess but I found this very funny. Photo of us from a bygone era. Some of you will have seen it before.

You are gifted! I can't walk on a treadmill at all! The motion under my feet makes me dizzy. LOL.

@JudyEv can't believe you can hold a book, read, and walk on the treadmill. I can't walk and chew gum at the same time! LOL

@ElusiveButterfly Another example of multi-tasking, haha. I have to be careful and hold on with one hand or I get a bit unsteady.

I'm a bit giddy when I get off. I hold on to the hand rail till it passes.

That's a good way of looking at it. I am worried that I might walk too far from home then my back will play up and I'll struggle to get home.

@jstory07 That's why I prefer to use the treadmill. If something goes wrong I can just stop.

Wow, you two looked great in uniform! What a cool backstory! I don't think I knew that was how you two met. When I used to run on the treadmill, I would create playlists on my phone set to the amount of time I wanted to be on the treadmill. Then I'd play the music as I ran. When the music was over, that meant I was done and could stop!

@JudyEv You are making the effort, and that's what counts! Whether it's 10 minutes or 14 minutes or whatever, you are still do more than those people who are still laying on the couch.

Several times I thought I'd stop at ten minutes but had to get to the end of the article I was reading and ended up doing 14 minutes I'm embarrassed that that is all I do at a time but mostly I do that several times a day. My running days are certainly over. I've never been very athletic. But I do have other good points!!

This is a lovely photo of you two and I have to say that you have not changed a lot. I never tried to read while walking, I should try, there are no cars on the private road behind our property.

@JudyEv I could miss a rock on my pathway, this is sure, better that I look where I put my feet, as my mother always suggested.

It might not be a good idea. It would be worse than being on your phone I think as you might get too engrossed in your book and fail to see any hazards.

What a beautiful couple you all are. Like you said whatever works. When I went to the gym I would play music on my phone (with earplugs of course) and that made time go by faster, but I never could walk with just one hand holding on I need both otherwise I fall flat on my face.

Great photo, I remember ages ago while living in Latvia my husband and I got a discount on a gym for one year. Every day we went to use the equipment and did at least 20 minutes on treadmills. Walking side by side we just discussed our day and so on. However, the result of those treadmill walks for me was a painful right heel that stopped hurting after a while when we no longer went to the gym. I don't even know how or why it happened.

I sometimes get strange pains in my feet and legs which is why I feel more secure walking on the treadmill. If something suddenly starts to hurt, at least I'm not half a mile from home.

It's nice to hear that you are both with the brass band before. I love the marching bands during the festivities. Fortunately there are still the marching bands here.

Great picture! And what a great way to meet. I've gotten really good with crazy glue, guitar glue, and other sealants. Can I have a stab at your hubby's valve? A doctor told me once that I might have a "prolapsing" valve, but another (older) doctor told him he was full of sh*t. Ever since the two younger doctors' "intellectual discussion," laced with laughter, as I was sitting there wondering what the frig "prolapsing" meant, and why it was funny (read: male and female doctors in their early 30s), I have decided that the whole world is, in fact, full of sh*t.

Unless you manage to find a 'family' doctor, medicos nowadays seem to treat patients as just another number. Some of them really don't seem to care about what a person might be feeling or thinking.

I played an alto horn a couple times, in the marching band. Usually, I played a trumpet or the French horn in concert band. I love this photo, it's very nice! One of my heart valves leaks also, so too much walking creates chest pain.

It seems leaking heart valves are quite common. Do you have tablets or a spray to use if necessary? Vince has been told there is no real cause for concern as in he's not going to have a heart attack but if his chest starts to hurt then he eases up.

@JudyEv It's the mitral valve, which they said isn't a heart attack. I just slow down and the soreness goes away. I was on Inderol for a while, but now I'm not taking anything.

We hired this and used it enough that we thought we'd go ahead and buy it - then we didn't use it for years. So it's good that it is at last being used.

Cool pic! And I really like readers digests. My mom had me read a couple and they were really interesting! I like to distract myself on the treadmill by playing on my phone, going on MyLot, watching Netflix, reading books, etc.
