Daddy Long-Legs

I am one who hates spiders with a passion. Especially the big black hairy looking ones and the little jumping ones. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. Yesterday I remembered that it's not all spiders that I hate. I don't hate what we always called Daddy Long-Legs. I remember playing with these spiders as a child. They were always so gentle. If I happen to see one of these spiders inside, I always capture it and put it back outside. I remember someone telling me once that the Daddy Long-Legs was very poisonous and that it's mouth is too small so it couldn't bite a human. I just read online that they aren't poisonous to humans at all. That is an urban myth.

Correct daddy long-legs' venom is only dangerous for insects, they are not dangerous to humans. I always move them outside, I grab them by a leg and put outside.

@simone10 I kill the others, many bite and are dangerous.

I take them outside too. Any other spiders will be taken care of promptly.

I do that with those poor sluggish insects we call "mosquito eaters." I am having a brain fart (too many days in isolation in Montana) and forgetting their real name.

I always heard that their mouth was too small to bite humans or it would be toxic. Glad that is a myth. I did not mind them when I was young. I do not see them now, as someone else said. I get creeped out by wolf spiders, outside, because they get big and they jump.

Yes, that's what I heard also. Their venom is toxic, but only to insects. I haven't seen one in a while either. I am with you on wolf spiders and especially because they jump. We have had tiny spiders that jump and even they creep me out.

I have had them walk over my legs and not minded but when they get to be annoying its hard to persuade them to go outside.

@simone10 I think myself that they get lazy and canĀ“t be bothered about where they are too much.

The spiders seen in our area are harmless creatures but dirty your place by weaving their nets overnight all over the place.

I think that there used to be more Daddy Long Legs spiders years ago then there are now, I cannot remember the last time that I saw one. I couldn't imagine them being poisonous, they were everywhere and I don't recall anyone ever having a reaction.

I think you are right about there not being as many. What I heard was that they were poisonous but not to humans because their mouths were too small to bite us. I found out that was wrong. They are not poisonous to humans at all, only insects.

I can't say that I like spiders. But hating them seems to me vastly exaggerated. When I see a spider, I make it crawl on a sheet of paper and throw it out of the window.

@TheHorse Not the answer I expected from an educated man. :-( Why don't you let it crawl on a sheet of paper and throw it out of the window? Don't complain if you're swamped by flies and midgets.

I used to play with Daddy Long Legs too as a kid. We had lots of them in our garage. They were fun because they were so gentle.

Doesn't matter what spider it is or how small it is I am still freaked out. Of course, I am more freaked out by the bigger-sized ones.

Years ago, I got a spider bite on my cheek. The side of my face puffed up like a balloon. I had to keep taking ibuprofen. The only thing I could think of is that the spider bit me in my sleep.

I can understand completely. Any other kind of spider will freak me out too. A few years ago at another place we lived, there must have been a couple in the air duct above my desk. Several mornings in a row, a tiny spider would appear in front of my face. I would get a tissue and take care of it, then another one appeared the next morning. After the second one, I moved my desk.

I don't mind if they crawl on my hand or arm but don't want them anywhere else on my body. It wouldn't scare me, I would be afraid they would get hurt by me moving.
