Thunderstorms and Power Outages

United States

It's Monday again!! wasn't it just Monday or did this week have more than one?? What a difference a day makes. Today it's sunny and the sky is blue. Yesterday the sky was ominous and we had thunderstorms and torrential rain throughout the day. Mid-morning there was a sonic size clap of thunder that shook the house and everything went out....power, cable, internet and land-line. Thankfully the power came back on within an hour so the a/c kicked right on and got the heat out of the house. But, the cable company said that it would take between 24 and 48 hours for them to fix the problem. It's funny how my oldest daughter lives on the other side of the cornfield. When there's no corn growing we can see each others houses. But we're on totally separate grids so we've never both been without power, etc at the same time. With social distancing this is the one time I was hesitant about going and hanging out there. But I probably would have if the power hadn't come back on when it did. Anyway, the cable came back quicker than they predicted so it all ended well. At least this time my internet and cable was widespread and wasn't just mine. That's my exciting day yesterday. Now I'm going to enjoy my coffee and chat here for awhile. I missed everyone yesterday.

We've had a lot of storming here as well. No power outage but flickering a lot. It's really cooled things down which is nice.

We had flickering too so I wasn't surprised when the power finally went out.. We don't have power outages often but yesterday the weather was pretty bad.

I am glad that the problem is now fixed. We had such a hot day yesterday, but thunderstorm and rain during the night. Today it rains and it is so cool, I love it.

@Marilynda1225 It is a wonderful sunny day, no hot, very dry, if all summer days were like today.

Our temperatures dropped too with the rain but today it's creeping back up again. At least the grass is looking a bit greener with the rain we had. Hope you're having a good day Anna

Sorry to hear about thunderstorm in your area. The power failures are so very common here also. It does not require a big storm for power to go off here. Slight rain is sufficient for that.

We don't usually get power outages here unless the weather is severe. It must be frustrating when you power goes out often

It does feel like this week has had two Monday's! Honestly, I'm not sure it even feels like Monday. Supposed to storm here. We haven't had the power go out for more than a few minutes this year, but now that I say it, I'm sure we'll see a big outage.

Guess it depends on how bad the storm coming through is for your area. I'm inland so we'll be getting lots of rain and wind. Yesterday was freaky and it's rare that we lose power.

The internet going down for an hour is definitely a first-world problem! Glad everything is up and running for you again!

I can survive without the internet but no power and no a/c was not something I wanted to deal with. Thankfully the power came back and we got the a/c back within a reasonable amount of time.

Welcome back. Power outages are so rare I find these days now, for us anyways. I think it is because we live in a large city, or we've been lucky. It used to be fun trying to keep everyone busy and happy at the same time during an outage, but totally possible.

We don't have power outages very often but when the weather gets severe a tree limb could take down a power line and whamo we're in the dark. I was afraid it wouldn't come back on quickly and we'd wouldn't have the a/c. I can deal with most things but sweating isn't one of them

You are so lucky that it was short lived. We started out sunny, then it got cloudy, then it poured. We didn't have thunder, but thanked heavens that the sun returned and dried up everything before our family and grandkids arrived. Partying in the garage wouldn't have been as much fun.

I'm glad the weather didn't interfere with your family gathering. Social distancing in the garage wouldn't have been as much fun

I'm glad your power wasn't out for too long. I hope you needed rain. I know we do here, but the hit and miss showers we're getting isn't doing what it needs to. I'm seeing brown grass for the first time in two years. Last year was very wet.

There were some areas that flooded but it was mostly by the river and some low lying areas. My area didn't flood.
