how and when do you get the results?

hi all! when you need to have labwork or diagnostic tests done like blood, x-ray, ultrasound, ecg, etc, how soon do you get the results? do you have to go back after a day or two? is it emailed to you? when the new hospital was built about three years ago, i found out that it only takes 2 hours to get the results of a blood extraction and urinalysis (urine sample). because of this, i would schedule them on the same day as my doctor's appointment. i would have breakfast at their canteen afterwards then walk or catch a jeep to the mini-mall nearby to buy groceries, medicine, stuff for the house, etc during that 2-hour gap. that way, i tackle several tasks/errands in one day/one trip. in the past, i would go to a private laboratory/diagnostic company that's farther than this hospital. then you had to come back the next day for the results, so it's two trips out. it was also always crowded, so you had to wait a long time for your turn.

It depends, if the blood (or urine) test is needed to perform another test, we get the results in one hour. If it's "not urgent" after a few hours or the day after. We do not have to go back they transmit everything electronically to our personal doctors. We get free breakfast if we were asked to fast for the tests. Right now we are avoiding to go to the hospital, unless it is a urgency.

i think it's better that way, that they forward it to the doctor. what do they give you for breakfast?

@hereandthere For breakfast they usually give coffee with milk and a croissant or toasted bread with jam if someone cannot have a croissant for medical reasons.

My house doctor will always give me an appointment so we can talk about the result of my blood test. Well, it really depends on what kind of test. If I am in the hospital, I will get the result in a few minutes time.

Vince has to have his blood tests a few days before his doctor's appointment. When he gets there, the results have already been sent through to his doctor. The system seems to work well.

yes, it's better that way, when it's forwarded to the doctor already. i guess he's been seeing the same doctor and having the tests done at the same place for a long time now?

@hereandthere That's true. He has a very good relationship with his present doctor and trusts him implicitly.

for me, when my blood is extracted for PTPA, it takes only 2 hours to finish it all including the result.

@hereandthere during the first few months of the ECQ, there was a makeshift clinic for our cardiologist at the parking area of the hospital. the medtech had to go out and i had to extend my arm through a small opening where she extracted the blood.

When I go for the swab test, I need to wait for a week to get a result. Maybe it's not urgent compared to those who are exposed outside.

I will get my results on the 22nd of this month, almost a month from the date that they took my blood. I don't know if that's normal or not, I rarely see doctors so I just go with the flo.

You did not ask them or they did not tell you how you can get the results? It is not safe to always be at the hospital premises these days.

huh? i was describing how it's usually done here (the speed between private/independent labs vs hospital lab) and was curious if it's the same in other countries.
