Well, that's sad

My favorite sewing machine is making me sad. I bought it at a yard sale, years ago. I thought I wanted the cabinet.
It is sturdy. Made of metal. Has some stitch choices. Runs like a sewing machine, it usually just purrs.
I imagine it is at least fifty years old or so. It is a Singer Touch and Sew.
I was hurrying to sew some extra masks before we went to Oklahoma for the funeral, and I ran out of bobbin thread. I refilled the bobbin, but now the needle strikes on something inside the bobbin and feed dog compartment.
I cannot figure it out. I even broke one needle the other day.
Tonight I wanted to get started on the masks for my daughter and I thought all I would have to do would be to put in a heavy duty needle, but it is still striking on something. I lowered the feed dog, opened and removed the throat plate. I removed all the lint, but I still cannot move the part that seems to have gotten out of line.
I had to switch to another machine. I do not like it as well. It was one my niece bought for one project, then gave it to my older sister, who was living with me and my sister gave it to me so I would have a portable machine that I could take to sewing classes. It is not nearly as nice.
I have a machine I bought from a friend who needed money. It does not work, but maybe I can get it to. My sister in law wants to give me her old machine, that does not work. She thinks I may be able to get it to.
If I am going to get back into sewing, I need a good machine, that works well. Are there any sewing machine mechanics in the house?

I'm sorry I am not an expert on sewing machines. If the truth be told, I've been rather wary of them ever since I pierced my finger on my mother's old hand wound Singer when I was a very small boy, though I was always fascinated by the mechanism and loved winding the bobbins for the lower feed.
The Touch & Sew dates from around 1965 and later, depending on the model. You could probably find a manual for it online, which might help sort out the problem. This page might help:

IN the past I have had luck with cleaning them up and getting them to work. I think the old ones are the best.

Have you tried removing the bobbin and putting it in the other way around? (It's happened to me before.)

Touch n sew bobbins cannot be put in backward. In fact you can fill them without ever taking them out. I know where the problem is, sort of. It is in the metal piece that the bobbin nests in. I may have pulled it out of line when I overfilled the bobbin and got a tangle. Yes, I have put a bobbin in backwards before, too.

I have one working. I just have to fill some light colored bobbins and thread it with light colored thread to go with the masks and the quilt blocks I am cutting. I like to keep two functional machines at all time, one threaded white or cream and the other threaded black or navy. I may get inspired and solve the problems yet.

This machine is very likely more than fifty years old. I am glad you have a good machine.
