We'd just like to talk to a real person. How hard should that be?

Out of the blue, our telephone company has advised us that our plan will change whether we like it or not. The new plan doesn’t suit us. But, try as we might, we cannot contact the company to talk to someone about our options. We can go to their website which gives a phone number if nothing on the site answers your query. However, the number only gives you a number of options – press button 1 for this, 2 for that, etc – then says that, because of the COVID upset, some services are not available – and then they cut you off!
As you can imagine, this is very annoying, not to mention frustrating. So Vince visited the Telstra office in our city, not expecting that they’d be able to help much. He was right. They couldn’t help much but the customer service officer did give him a good piece of advice. He said the only way that he might get to speak to a ‘real’ person was to pretend he was a new customer. He said they’d be quick as a flash to speak to him if they thought they could sell him something. So it looks like that is what we’ll have to do. Wish us luck.
The photo is of insulator which carried telephone wires in the good old days.

I hate to talk on the phone anyway, then scenarios like this make it worse. Good luck finding something that is suitable for you.

Yes, I have thought of that too, when I have tried to reach companies. Your post just reminded me I need to call about my dishwasher again this morning. Yesterday, when I called they said there was a 47 minute wait, and of course, they didn't offer to call you back.

That is so true that companies will bend over backwards to get a new customer, but yet do nothing to help existing customers. I see it happen over and over with so many companies. It's very frustrating, and also is a poor way to run a business.

@JudyEv That is true. I think some companies are using the virus as an excuse to provide poor service. You would think the opposite would be true....with so many companies going out of business, you would think that those still around would bend over backwards to provide the best service possible to draw in customers to ensure their business survival.

@moffittjc Some of the worst offenders are government or semi-government agencies. Their jobs are probably more or less assured.

I always use that option. If none of the options fit my request, I just choose another one at random just so I can speak to someone. I hope you solve your dilemma! Have a good week.

@LindaOHio But the 'person' that hung up was just a recorded message so there is no point in calling again.

@JudyEv How rude! That would become a major challenge for me. I'd be calling every day!

I hate dealing with anything on the phone anymore. Does the website have a chat option. I have had good luck with that on my cell phones

@JudyEv I think places are taking advantage of this to pull things on the customers.

Our phone service sky rocketed their price. Jay wanted to switch from the home phone to a cell phone and it took them two weeks to change this! Then, Jay had to go online, to get it finalized! What a stupid rat race

I hate when companies treat customers as if they were nobody! I totally understand how you feel Judy, I really hope your strategy to approach them has worked out!

@JudyEv

I'd be applying for that post in a heartbeat.
You just have to do your best at annoying customers.

I wonder if the Telstra offices here are closed. As you may know, Telstra outsourced some of its workforce. I used to work in a company here that handled Telstra. I have not tried working for Telstra but I used to pass by the workstations that have the T logo. I worked for a telcom as well with a T logo on it. (not Telstra)

@JudyEv Glad you are happy. I know someone who worked with Telstra in Australia. She resigned and now she's on YouTube.

Our phone company also have that numbered options. But we are given a chance to wait for a person to handle the call. It only takes 15 minutes or so.
