We are looking at some serious topics as we start the year. We always do. We had a six hour inservice as an introduction to Dyslexia. Dyslexia is NOT "reversing letters or words". That is a myth. Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that inhibits or prevents decoding of written language. We watched videos about suicide prevention, and anti bullying. Tomorrow we begin to learn about Trauma Informed Schools. We will discuss traumas young children experience growing up and what makes them resilient in the face of trauma. We look at how that affects learning. So, my brain gets easily tired. I am learning, remembering, a lot.

I once attempted to help-encourage a man who had all sorts of learning issues, dyslexia among the stack. He also could not figure out basic math- sequencing numbers was a mystery to him. 10,11, 12,etc. etc. then heading into 20 and then 30..... He practiced and practiced. No go. Still, we read books together and had hearty chats.

That math issue is also a form of dyslexia. It takes a lot of work to help people re program their brain. Reading and chatting is wonderful.

@GardenGerty We teamed through many books together, including Harry Potter. I'd encourage him to sound out a word, think about it, talk about the book. On and on. Good for the both of us.

I am a paraeducator in the 4th and 5th resource room in an elementary school. Nothing special, we just want to do our best for the kids.

Correct, dyslexia is a neurological disorder, that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and how they relate to letters and words.

I doubt I will ever be able to completely retire. My husband has had too many medical bills. Being around the kids keeps me moving and my brain more stimulated.
