Those Noisy Cicadas

For the last few weeks I have noticed these noisy cicadas making their piercing sounds in the backyard. Snapped a photo to show you what they look like. The photo is the 17 year cicada in my poplar tree. I remember seeing them often growing up. But the sound did not bother me like it does now. I thought they were cool. Not sure if what I am hearing is part of the 17 year cicadas that were suppose to emerge from the ground this year or if these are just the annual cicada. Either way they are noisy! Hopefully they will be gone soon. Their sound is of course to attract a mate.

You can't. Just have to get used to it until they leave soon.

Crickets at night and cicada in the day. JJ straightened me out on that. I did not know cicada did not sing at night. Very cool to know now.

Maybe you can put earplugs in your ears when they start making noise.

Yes. Cicada's can be VERY noisy. Some people call them the "sound of silence in the Midwest." Of course there is nothing silent about a cicada. lol

I've been hearing them here for months. Now, they aren't very loud. Must be the ones that haven't found a mate yet.

They are striking insects for sure. But they need to go away now. The wasps don't bother me, as long as I don't bother them and accidentally step on one.

Do you mean they come out only once every 17 years? I thought it was every other year. It's a pretty insect.

There are efferent types. But yes this particular one is a 17 year cicada. Here is one of many interesting articles about them. And I have seen stories on the news about 2020 being the year for their emergence.

I know cicadas can be very noisy and, once you pick up on the sound, it seems to be all you can hear.

There are 13-year and 17-year cicadas. I did an article on them at one point. I used to love the sound of the cicadas during my summer vacation from school when I would sit on the front porch reading.

Warmer weather seems to bring out a symphony of noise from the insect world. It's much quieter in winter although much colder too
