Snappy gums seen in the north of Western Australia

I love trees and really wish I could identify them more easily. It’s on my ‘to-do’ list. In the Karijini National Park area of West Australia, we’ve seen dozens of really white trees. Apparently the local name is ‘snappy gum’ and its botanical name is Eucalyptus leucophioia. It is endemic to northern Australia and has smooth, powdery bark and white flowers. Can you see the pinkish hue on the upper surfaces of the limb in the top right photo? Most don’t grow particularly high unless they have found a good water source. Some, like the two in the bottom photos, cling tenaciously to the sides of the gorges for which Karijini is famous. Unfortunately, the photo doesn’t do justice to how white the trees are and how they stand out in the landscape.

Just like you, I would like I could identify more trees and plants. We had Eucalyptus in the south of France, but not the white variety. The photos are beautiful.

@JudyEv Some are colorful and beautiful, but it's hard to make the difference from some of them.

There are many different species of eucalyptus with only small variations between them so they can be difficult to identify.

Awesome trees, I've never seen white trees or any kind of pink on any .... you're so lucky to have those kinds of trees. Really good shots.

I would just love to go to Australia and marvel the landscapes in person . Those cliff hanging ones are quite cool - nature finds a way!

it is amazing to see how these trees grow on rocky surfaces as can be seen in the two bottom photos.

i feel the same, ms. @JudyEv. these 'snappy gums' 're most beautiful! that pink hue 'cross the tops 'f branches most fascinatin'. 's 'lways 'mazed me, how trees can survive with roots 'xposed whilst clingin' to 'ts life source.

So the trees grow close to the ground for efficiently getting moisture, right? Due to climate? Much like our desert trees in the U.S. Southwest? Nature has a way of adapting even extremes Cool photo

I love gorges so that would definitely be a good place for me to visit. Strange name for the trees reminds me more of goats.

Where’s the kookaburra? Don’t they sit in the old gum tree, like the song says?? I do see the pinkish tint to them! Quite beautiful!
