What a Difference Sixty Years Makes

Do you realize that sixty years ago the United States of America elected the first Roman Catholic president? And it was quite a spectacle!
As you know, I love to go through newspaper archives. In 1960, when John Kennedy threw his hat into the ring to run for president, the fact that he was a Catholic became as important, if not more important, to some as anything he stood for politically. In fact, if you go back to the papers in early 1960 you'll see a number of news articles questioning where the allegiance of a Roman Catholic president would lie: with Rome, or with the U.S.? And were Democrats ready to vote for a Catholic? Or Baptists, Methodists, or southerners???
Last week, the U.S. elected its second Roman Catholic president.
Did you know Joe Biden's a Catholic?
It was probably not even mentioned, except in a couple of instances where it became an issue (such as in 2019 when a priest at a church in South Carolina refused to give communion to then-candidate Biden because of Biden's stand on abortion).
Maybe it's because of the polarizing nature of President Trump that Biden's religion was never brought forth. But in any instance, it is nice to see what a difference 60 years makes.
John Kennedy taking on the controversy about his Catholic faith in 1960:
Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy insists there is no conflict between his faith and running for president, saying the "constitution and my conscience h...

Ah...but now the Vice President gets classified as "black/non white", and a woman, and from immigrant community. She is more important with similar possibility of allegiance dilemma since the President is 77. Moreover, you don't know her views on all the topics that were debated between Trump and Biden. Shot in the dark?

@FourWalls Not sure so many hate him. You see, he won fairly large number of seats.

I know. But Trump is so hated in this country that Joe Walsh could’ve ran for President and won.

Okay, I'm showing my age, but I actually remember that 1960 election. I wasn't old enough to vote, but I watched the conventions on our old black and white tv with my dad. He was a Republican. I always liked Kennedy though. And I remember clearly that his being a Catholic was a big deal. The next presidential election in 1964 Lyndon Johnson had just passed the Civil Rights legislation and Barry Goldwater opposed it. I voted for Lyndon Johnson and I've been voting Democrat ever since. I'm waiting for someone to change my mind.
I think Biden's faith has been fairly well reported this year and I think it serves him well.

My state requires people to register as a party (even “other” is allowed) and I registered as a Libertarian. In 2018, however, I voted for two Republicans and two Democrats. I haven’t been a fan of “straight party” voting, although I have done it a couple of times...for the sake of simplicity, because everyone I wanted to vote for was in the same party.
My first presidential election vote went to independent John Anderson in 1980.

@FourWalls I came of age during the Civil Rights period and that always shaped my vote. I remember John Anderson, too.

Religion should not matter at all. I am glad it was not brought up at least much

I didn't know that Joe Biden was Catholic. When Kennedy was elected he was the shining hero of the times. I was 12 years old; and teens at the time were absolutely 100% behind this new president.

I was four months in the womb when Kennedy was assassinated.

That is very interesting perhaps the spirit of Kennedy is also sending a message
