I miss hugs

At church we do not hug. We do not shake hands. We stay in our socially distant places and we wave. It kind of disrupts the connection of worshiping together. But we want to take care of vulnerable people, and we want to stay well. We had a nice Christmas dinner yesterday. In the gymnasium. Our seats were six feet apart. No one across the table from us. Food was catered in from a local grocery store. It was served on disposable trays and paper plates. Our plates were dished up and brought to us, as were drinks and desserts. Only about four people did the serving. Still, the food was good, the company was good, and we had a nice afternoon, but I do really miss the closeness this year. Later, we went to visit my sister. I had two e mails from my brother. Talked briefly to my daughter on the phone. Same for my son. The cats happily give their version of hugs.

I'm sorry your church isn't hugging. We're hugging. We ask first if it's okay. It sounds like you had a good dinner. I'm glad you visited your sister and talked to your brother and daughter. It will be so good when our lives return to normal and the pandemic is a bad memory.

I am hoping there will be some lessons learned here, like valuing people and being thankful for what we have.

@GardenGerty Yes, cats do give their version of hugs. I hug my cat and give her kisses and she gives her version of kisses too.

@Hannihar Not with each other, Tink plays rough with Mickey. Each of the cats spends time loving on Bob and I.

I shower my cats with kisses before they slapped me. What an unfriendly bunch.

It just seems to put barriers up to being human.

We don't hug either at church. Lily (my black cat) always gives me hugs and kisses.

Nothing replaces a hug, hopefully we will be able to hug in 2021 or 2022. I think that we are in this for the long haul.

Yes, we are in it for the long haul, and we are "in it to win it", so we make sacrifices now.

It was. And I learned more about one person, at a six foot distance. It was something we needed to make us feel connected again.

We do what we have to. We stay in place and do what our pastor calls our "princess waves".

I desperately miss hugs too especially from my grandchildren. These are crazy times we're living through but hopefully it will make us appreciate those hugs even more when we're able to give and receive them again. Your church dinner sounds like a good time and that they took every precaution to keep everyone safe. I've been watching church online and as much as it's nice having the ability to do so nothing can take the place of in person worship.

I only give and get hugs from my husband these days, although my older son said, "Oh, what the heck!" and gave me a bear hug when he visited a few months ago - outside.

I give the occasional hug to one or two students. This is a part of their school experience that they need that you cannot zoom. I continue to be in excellent health. I suspect it is from some of my "magic potions"--actually just from things I do routinely that are supposed to be helpful, like fresh air, sunshine, vitamins, etc.

It will be an unusual and sad Christmas for many this year, I fear. But, like your group, people will make the best of it. We really are a resilient lot sometimes.
