Seeing the moon in the middle of the day

Some days ago, Danielle @VivaLaDani13 commented on how seeing the moon in the middle of the day is a bit odd. Next day the moon was hanging over the hill I can see from my window, this picture is taken between 10AM and 11AM (as it's light, it can't be earlier) Do you spend time looking at the sky during the day or night? Is there something you'd really like to see? Or something weird that you've seen? I'm planning to go out of town when it's a bit lighter to see if I can get a good view of the Milky Way.

Hubby is very fascinated with the moon. I was looking for a calendar that featured moon pictures for him.

That'd be a very nice gift. I keep trying to get nice pictures of the moon, but I don't have a lot of patience. Patience is important for taking technically tricky pictures.

@MarshaMusselman It was some kind of super moon, wasn't it? It's tricky, it is easiest to take the picture when it's not too dark, but it looks better when it's dark.

Tonight's moon was quite large but if I were to take a pic of it I'm sure it wouldn't look fantastic.

@Torunn Thank you for tagging me in your post. Such a beautiful photo of the moon! I do spend quite a bit of time looking up at the sky but more so in the night time as I like to see if I can see a shooting star or anything moving up there. Sometimes I wish every now and then all the street lights could turn off for just a little bit to lessen the light pollution to see the night sky better!

Yes, it's a lot light pollution here too. I see the stars much better from the stables, but the view there is north-west and for the Milky Way I think I need south or south-east. I don't think I stayed out to see the stars when I was in Australia. Must do that next time, 'cause it'll be a bit different.

@VivaLaDani13 I've seen some great pictures from up in the mountains, with the Milky Way and lot of other stars. I think it's like that in many countries. Australia has a lot a outback, hasn't it? It should be possible to find somewhere without lights, and hopefully without too many dangerous creatures.

@Torunn aw no! Seeing the Milky Way would be lovely! I hope you can! Many years ago, my dad was dating someone and her parents owned a farm. We stayed on that farm and slept outside and the sky was so beautiful! Saw so many shooting stars. The closer to the country you are, the better to see the night sky.

I've seen two solar eclipses in my life.

That's cool! Did you have the fancy glasses? I've seen one, and a lunar eclipse. I watched the solar eclipse on the screen of my camear, 'cause I didn't have the right glasses.

@Torunn The first time I had a piece of normal glass blackened with the soot of a candle. The second time I had special glasses with cardboard frames which were made especially for the event and sold in shops. I watched the second eclipse outside a village where the air was clear. We were standing near a meadow where there were cows. It didn't become really dark when the sun was covered but it was darker than it would have been in the middle of the day. The cows were puzzled. They all lay down, obviously they thought (if cows can think) that night was coming and they should prepare for sleep. No sound could be heard, no bird was making a noise. It was a bit eerie until the spectacle was over.

@MALUSE I suppose we saw the same one, was it 5 or 6 years ago? I wish I had done like you and gone away from people, 'cause people are never quiet. I was at work, so I was standing there with a group of people. What you describe sounds like the same silence we get with some sorts of fog. I like it.

@Torunn This happens here too, not so often and not so ‘close’ but it is sometimes seen. We didn't hear from each other during the holidays, I wish you a Happy New Year, all the best to you and your family!

Thanks, and likewise for you and yours! I used a telephoto lens to get the picture, I don't think it happens more often here but my veranda faces due west so it very often happens were I can see it without going out.

@LowRiderX Yes, that's really nice, when it hangs low on the horizon and looks bigger than normal. I like full moon in the winter, it doesn't get as dark as on a new moon

That moon looks huge! I saw the moon in the middle of the day several times. Well, more like late afternoon, and in summer, as there are more hours of light. It's also easier to take photos of the moon with daylight because you don't have to worry about ISO or whatever must be changed for night photography. I wish I could see a starry sky. Too much light pollution for it to happen where I live. Perhaps it's better up on the mountains, but the best skies seem to be in the desert. Auroras would be nice to see too, and to hear.

Taking photos of the moon when it's dark is too much fiddling around for me, I don't have the patience. Right now it would be possible I suppose, since it's midsummer it doesn't really get dark here. It's so light I'm not quite sure what the face the moon's in now, since it's not visible til really late or very early. I've been in the mountains in Italy, far north, but the skies weren't very good during the night. The week I was there, it was cloudy every night and nice and sunny during the day. Quite weird, it was like a blanket shrouded the valley every night. Else I think we would have seen the starry sky, 'cause it wasn't much light pollution compared. In Norway, I think I'd get a good view at the coast, but the Milky Way is south-east so I suppose I'd have to go out in boat. Maybe that should be on my to-do list. Seeing both the auroras and the Milky Way from a boat.

@sabtraversa I was visiting a school in Bruneck, they started early so to get breakfast at the student house I was staying at I had to get up before the sun rose. It was quite weird, 'cause it was dark when I came, dark when I went to school the first day and then when I came out of the school, the clouds were gone and I could see mountains everywhere. I get easily boat sick, so I'll definitly get a big boat so I can invite lots of people! :-)

@Torunn I thought of desert, might as well be the desert of water you can cross with a boat. If you ever get the chance to do that, please invite me! Sorry you weren't lucky with the clouds in the Italian mountains. I don't know if skies ever get clear at night up there, I always slept at night when I was there.

We often see the moon in the middle of the day when the sky is clear... I am sure that today is one of those days, unless it's new moon, I have to check.

It's getting there, new moon is on the 13th. I live by a tidal river, so I can see on the river whether there's a full moon or a new moon, 'cause the tide is much higher then

@Torunn Our brook is too small to notice if it's full moon, but the cats of my neighbors get nervous when we approach full moon... and I cannot sleep. I wonder if I am a lycanthrope.

'm told i spend too much time doin' so :) i'd thought i'd seen the moon hangin' out't odd times 'n 'twas perplexed. found 'twas not the moon here, but a planet. which 'twas reassurin' 's i'd wondered how the moon'd traveled so fast, lol. livin' out'n the country, barrin' cloud cover, our skies're quite glorious 't night. most all phenoms can be witnessed, so i'm fortunate fer that. great pic!

Yes, that's one thing I miss in town. It's not a huge town, but light pollution is still all over the place. Too cold to hang out to check the Milky Way now, but in some months I'm going to try. There was a couple of planets some weeks ago I think. Jupiter and Saturn. I think I saw them, big and different colour from the stars.

@crazyhorseladycx I forgot my DSLR every night the days the planet were visible. And I can't find my tripod! I can find a lot of other things, many which I had forgotten I have, but the things I need. Spent 1.5 hours looking for my winter jacket this morning. Even colder today, so I needed the big jacket.

@Torunn ugh, light pollution. the bane 'f society, but which 'tis felt necessary. don't blame ya not hangin' out'n frigid weather fer such. yepperz, saw 'em fer 3 nights straight, though 'twas not able to get any e'en semi-decent pics 'f such. here'd be me complainin', but i couldn't get 'nough back light to capture such.

There are some days where I put in super long hours at work that I see the moon hanging low in the western sky when I'm driving to work in the morning, and then later that night when I'm driving home from work I can see it rising in the eastern sky. Pretty cool seeing a setting moon and a rising moon in the same day.

That's nice! Do you still work in two places? Or is it super long work-day in one place? I've walked to work at sunrise and back at sunset quite a few times, but since the sun rises late and still sets early, that's not very impressive at the moment.

@Torunn I still work in two different places. I'm enjoying both jobs, so I decided to keep working at both. They're fun to be at, not at all like what I experienced in my previous 20 years of work.

@moffittjc Cool! That explains the long work hours too. Right now I'd get sunrise while walking to work and sunset while walking back, but I'm not sure I'll walk to work or work from the couch. Hmm ....

In the summer we have so many hours of sun that we wouldn't see the moon if it wasn't visible in the day.

@JudyEv I love it, I find the opposite very strange. When it's suddenly dark in the summer. It's so sudden closer to the equater, it's day and then it's night. Here the sun sets for hours.

Thanks :-) The moon so much bigger when it's close to the horizon, doesn't it? It's much easier to get photos when it's visible at twilight, in the dark the contrasts are too big.

@Torunn You’re right - when you take photos of the moon at night, it’s dull as there’s nothing to complement it. That is why I love taking sunrise shots. Sunsets are difficult for me to chase.
