And Speaking of Cold......

It’s at the freezing point here, but sunny today. If you dress warmly, you can do anything. However, being in China during the month of December was the worst cold hubs and I have ever experienced. We did a lot of sightseeing in Beijing. The worst was standing on ice cold cobblestones in Tiannamen Square and climbing the steps of The Great Wall. In my photo we are in Old Town in Beijing on our way to sightsee and have dinner in a stranger’s home. That’s where I learned how to make dim sum. It was toasty warm in that kitchen. Have you ever been unbearably cold?

Well two Sundays back, I was outside for some time. I was wearing 3 layers of clothes including a thick jacket. Plus a woollen cap. Yet even with some sunshine, the winds were very very cold and I felt cold even after some time!

A cold wind is awful, no matter how you are dressed. It was like that in Beijing.

@DianneN I went to feel the cold breeze of December. Just to a feel of cold Christmas. I hope we will not experience the cold weather because our houses are not suitable to snowing.

@DianneN Worst ever was in Delhi in January trying to sleep on a charpoy under a tree. Freezing air blew all night and I had only the thinnest blanket. Eventually I joined some men around a two bar electric fire connected to a lamppost. Next night I joined a group of men around a big brazier and that was better. You look so cosy in that thing you’re sitting in.

@DianneN After another trip when Delhi was boiling hot I flew back to Ireland, changing planes in Moscow. Moscow was in the grip of a snow storm, the plane parked way out yonder and we had to walk a considerable distance in a blizzard to the terminal, me dressed in those pyjama type things you could spit through which had been so appropriate for Delhi.

I can only imagine sleeping in the cold - barely. I’m glad you sought out heat. Truth be told, I’d rather be miserably hot than miserably cold. Frostbite or heatstroke?

Sightseeing when it's that cold doesn't sound like much fun. Your picture reminds me of the carriage rides in NY (central park) and how people are covered in blankets. I remember years ago when I was driving home from work and my car got stuck in the snow. Thankfully I wasn't alone and we had to push the car until it got free.

It wasn’t very enjoyable. We warmed up inside any store we came across. It was as awful as going to Hong Kong in August. The heat was unbearable after 10:00 AM. These were pulled by one man on a bicycle. That sounds awful. Glad you were able to get the car free. Hate winter and snow!

@DianneN That just sounds painful to play cards without gloves in the freezing cold! No, we are down in the valley - but the whole state is freezing in the winter lol. This winter has been very mild, thankfully - coldest has been in the teens.

When I married my son's father it was extremely cold. We were is some kind of polar vortex or something. Here we were out trying to have fun in Williamsburg and practically had frostbite. I was wearing a coat that was quite stylish, but not very warm...froze my butt off! I have been cold many times though growing up along the Great Lakes.

@DianneN It was first time in my life that I was facing that severe cold and there were no adequate clothing. We then proceeded to Shimla much colder place than Delhi but we did not feel so much. May be the wind in Delhi troubles more.

@msdivkar I think winds add to us being uncomfortable. Even sitting by the pool in Florida or at the beach on a hot day, the winds can either be cooling or very chilling.

@DianneN I grew up in Minneapolis and remember one winter where I was working they would not close unless it was an absolute blizzard. I bet that was not fun being in very cold weather while visiting someplace else. What brought you to China or was it because you have never been there and wanted to see it? Were the people friendly besides where you went to eat dinner?

My sister-in-law is from Minnesota and just moved back after living her entire adult life in NYC. She told be the same thing you just mentioned. We wanted to go to China, since we had only been to Hong Kong on a previous visit, and wanted to see Beijing, i’an, and Shanghai. Shanghai was much warmer. The people were very friendly wherever we went and many spoke English very well.

@DianneN I see. My husband and I visited New York during my Easter holidays many years ago. We had imagined early spring but it was freezing cold, the coldest Easter of the century. I bought a woollen cap and gloves with our expensive dollars. We went to more museums than we had planned because it was too cold to stay outside. I learnt the word 'slush' from the weather forecast we listened to every day. I've got a photo which I shot from inside a bus when we were following a snowplough! We had a special price for a return ticket which was not bad. We wanted to return earlier than planned but would have had to buy a regular ticket which was very expensive. So we stayed. We went to the Niagara Falls which were frozen and to Washington where it was a bit warmer.

@MALUSE Unfortunately, the true warmth of spring doesn't arrive here until the beginning of May. So sorry you had such a cold experience. You were wise to visit the wonderful museums to avoid the cold and slush.

In Russia it was minus 27 C/ -16.6F. It did not feel cold as it was a dry cold whereas here it is damp and horrible. The one time l felt it bad was visiting an orphanage 3 hours away by train with no heating. We spent three hours there then back on the cold train for three hours. By time we got home l was frozen to the core. It took 2 days to warm up after that!

I remember being so cold sometimes as a kid. Thinking I would never get home on my feet that felt like blocks. As an adult the coldest experience is getting gas in Winnipeg. That cold moist wind just tears your face off Alberta is dry and the cold just doesn't have the same bite.

I’m sure you have many more “cold” stories to tell. At least you live in a dry area. To me, cold is awful, but dressing appropriately helps. Warm feet, hands and head, but I’m sure you know that.

@DianneN Pedicabs were very popular in Indonesia in the past. But now most of them have been banned, because it is considered inhumane to use humans as their driving force. What still survives is the horse cart, a carriage drawn by horses.
