This one is going to be a bit different. Have you heard of these before? The mystery box can be any theme you can think of. Yarn, stationary, self care etc. Mystery yarn boxes from places like Mary Maxim is what gave me the idea of searching etsy.
I think even ebay has these types of things. The problem is that you have to trust the seller will send quality items and not something they bought at a dollar store or from a warehouse clean out etc..
I want to do this for yarn with some of the major companies though. Mary Maxim does one and I think Hobbii does another? Michael's has mystery $5 bags sometimes of craft things.
Do you like surprise "gifts"?

I have seen people unbox mystery boxes on YouTube, seems like fun...and I guess the Keto boxes are kind of a "mystery box". However I have never got one from Etsy. One I would love to get is a mystery diamond painting box lol

Oh I don't think you could go wrong with a mystery diamond painting box!
I wouldn't be opposed to a mystery keto box myself, but well.. Money.

@MommyOfEli2013 That's how I do a lot of purchases like subscription boxes. I try it for a month or two and then stop it. I can't afford to keep them going.
Oh it would be kind of awesome to do a diamond painting type thing but for like a jewlery box, wouldn't it?

@ScribbledAdNauseum It would be fun, I think....to get some things to diamond paint besides just a canvas...oh and to get a canvas that itself was a mystery!
A keto mystery box is fun...but I definitely understand the money thing. Thankfully we can enjoy the keto box for now

Oh yes, it's really easy to get addicted to the mystery boxes and to the subscription boxes.
I believe.. I'm going to try to explain this because I don't have the right term for it. There are ways you can buy the returns from major retailers like walmart and a lot of people will do this and then try to resell it. I am wondering if some of the goods in these mystery boxes come from that. An acquaintance of mine has considered doing this but the crates are upwards of $1000 to buy without the guarantee of successful re-sell.

@LadyDuck Yes, it seems those boxes can be a gamble. I do not think I'd like to open a box full of used wigs. All i can think of is lice.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I watched some videos where people opened those boxes and there was inside a lot of stuff, many broken things, used wigs... not something I would like to receive.

We bought a mystery box at the library. It contained 5 books, and out of those 5 books I only kept one of them. I read the description of the other four books and I wasn't interested in any of them, so I donated them to Little Library. I don't regret buying the mystery box. It wasn't expensive and it was fun to open it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Our libraries also sell books. They create mystery boxes around Christmas time, and the rest of the time they just sell books the normal way. The books are usually very cheap and I found many interesting books last time.

There are book stoers here in the US that do these "Date with a book" things where they cover the book in brown paper and you buy it and unwrap it. I think some libraries do the grab bags too but ours just sells books out of the lobby that they no longer need.

@Porcospino That's a great way for the library to bring in business. I know our library is doing very well for itself because they have constructed a new building to move into.

Let me know if you find mystery box on Etsy and if it's worth buying. You know I'm always in the market for MORE yarn.
I think my daughter got one of those mystery boxes at Michaels but I don't remember what was in it.

I will let you know. I think the first box i am going to get is from Mary Maxim though. I've not bought anything from them, but I vaguely remember my mom buying things from them at one time.

@Marilynda1225 I'm really just getting into the crafty side of myself. Crochet so far but I want to get into polymer clay sometime in the near future. I think my mom got the Mary Maxim Catalogs at one point. She was into every craft under the sun.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I get their catalog occasionally. They have good stuff and I remember many years ago buying hooked rugs and doing them. I've always enjoyed crafts of some sort through the years.

I did a couple jewelry lot mystery boxes the seller said had quality wearable included with the crafting lot and it was junk. Plastic crap you get in a pack at the dollar store stuff. I might get one from a lady I've been following and subscribe to that does jewelry jar openings. She has a good following and high reviews.

There is always a risk with that kind of stuff. That's why I think I"m going to go with the major companies before I try for any of the etsy or ebay sellers that are doing this.

@noni1959 Yeah, watching for positive feedback and the amount of sales for that particular item too.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I see some get nice things. I'll have to watch for those with a lot of positive feedback.

Right, it would take a lot of research into the seller. Watching their social media and looking at reviews. I'll go with a reputable company first before I go with any etsy seller, but one of these days I will go with an etsy seller.

I first heard about it on youtube when someone was talking about Mary Maxim Mystery yarn grab bags, but etsy sellers do these too.

No, I don't. The quality isn't ideal. I like to know what I'm getting, and that will last.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That seems like a smart move, actually. Something I would do as well.

That's completely understandable. We can't be too careful with our money now either. If I do something like this it will be with the mind of "I might not like all of this."

That's understandable, it's a risk to do. There are major companies that do these for things like yarn. If I do any, it would be with them first.

I get that, I do. It's not a bad thing to know what you're getting nowadays. The quality of items just isn't the same as it once was.
