Fleabane in the Garden

A few years ago I saw these tiny blooms in the yard. After researching I found they are weeds called Fleabane. And are in the Aster family. Some will let them grow, and I do as well. Fleabane is often seen growing in pastures, in open spaces, or along roadsides because it produces seeds prolifically. The fluffy seed heads easily disperse by wind and water. Unfortunately many types are invasive weeds. Not invasive here, so they are nice to see sprout up here and there in the yard and garden. I have seen them going by the roadside. They should return soon. We are getting better days lately. Winter is not over but maybe the worst is behind us.

Today is definitely a spring like day here. Those are beautiful and I believe I've seen them when traveling around (mostly in rural areas). We get dandelions here and I actually don't mind letting them sprout in the yard because they're pretty.

@CarolDM does fleabane really get rid of fleas?

I think the worst is behind us now too. Our snow melted away the last couple of days. I had never heard of the word Fleabane before. Thanks for sharing with us.

@CarolDM I think we have something like that here that comes up in the spring called a dandelion. Do those fleabane in the photo you provided, have a cotton ball on them eventually or do they stay yellow like the photo?

@stephcjh Dandelions are yellow, this one comes in many colors but is in the Aster family. Smaller than a dandelion. These do not have the cotton ball like the dandelion.

Even if considered weeds they are pretty flowers, there are several pretty weeds, if they are not invasive I let them grow.

@CarolDM they're still pretty. Here we have violets that are considered weeds alright I didn't know that when we moved into our house. I let them grow and they took over the neighborhood.

Do they come in pink colour too? I think I have seen them around on road sides while traveling. That's a pretty weed there.

@CarolDM I think I have seen the pink ones here on roadside. It might be a different weed but looks pretty similar to this one.

I have it here. I wonder, but have not researched, whether an extraction of it would keep fleas off the cats.

You got me curious so I researched and found this plant is actually poisonous to cats.
Fleabane poisoning can occur when your cat ingests or comes into close contact with the fleabane plant, which is found naturally throughout North America.

I don't know if I've ever seen Fleabane. Great shot. There is still some drifted s**w; but there is gravel showing on the front walk. Yay!

I've also seen Fleabane here and they thrive on roadsides and on vacant lots, reeds and wild plants are the favorite plants of photographers.
