I was relaxing at my computer this afternoon when I heard loud and bad sounds coming from the parking lot, to my left. It was rap "music," musically simplistic, with racist and sexist lyrics. I got to hear about "white man" this and "rich white boy" that, and "b*tch" and how much "pus*y" the "artist" gets. I grabbed my .22 and said, "Get off my lawn." Just kidding. I fired up Miles Davis's classic 1959 album, "Kind of Blue," loud, and I fired up my bass amplifier, loud, and started playing along with Miles on bass. In my mind, I was saying, "This is music, b*tch! Do you get it?" In reality, I was practicing along with a jazz album to which I want to know all of the bass lines. Jazz has always intimidated me, but as I challenge myself in my "old age," I realize that it follows "rules," just as all forms of music do. My music friend Michael has shown me "Western swing" chords on guitar, and I'm learning to play jazz bass by playing along with classic albums, like "Kind of Blue" and Dave Brubeck's "Time Out." When I finished playing along with Miles's "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader," the offending musical idiot was gone. I had won. Music is a force that brings us all together.. Music can be described as "counting without knowing it." All cultures have music. There are differences between cultures, and between musical cultures, but the similarities outweigh the differences. I want to see music as something that brings us together as human beings. In my college classes, I encourage students not to deny their prejudices, but to "analyze" where they came from. Can music be a force that brings us all together? Or have I simply consumed too much wine?

I do not like rap music at all you did the right thing. One year me and my boyfriend and some friends were camping and there was some teens playing loud rap music all night so in the morning my boyfriend and our friend turned on country music and turned it up loud everyone that was camping there did the same thing they got up and left.

I do not like rap music, but there are musics which words are designed to bring us all together that are also extremely boring. Music, is and must remain a pleasure, the same as good food. This is why playing loudly it's really a rude habit, what your neighbor likes could be something you totally dislike.

Good for you. I would have blasted my favorite music too, I hate rap with a passion but then what can you do to each his own but I definitely would not stand it to hear that kind of music in my ears. I like a mix of music so I have heard some of Miles Davis but not lately, I think one of my favorites was Spanish Key.

I could link some Miles here, but I'm hungry. I'll just say: Listen to "So What," from Kind of Blue. It is America at it best. Simple. Complex. White folks. Black folks. Real music.

As a musician, I become upset when I hear "bullsh*t" masquerading as music. I enjoy many kinds of music, but I cringe when I hear "garbage music."

Music can certainly bring people together, but also be very divisive - personally I don't class rap as music.

Technically, I don't think it should be defines as such. Many rappers don't know the first thing about poetry OR music.

I'm glad that kids can express themselves. But they have to think about what they're saying. My "main man" from my younger days, Gil-Scott Heron, has had some harsh things to say about contemporary "rap" "musicians."
