Another photographic challenge - breaststroke

The collage shows swimmers in the breaststroke events at a swimming carnival in Mt Barker, Western Australia. From a photographic viewpoint, this stroke didn’t lend itself to any spectacular shots. The hands and arms are under the water most of the time and the head is only out of the water long enough to breathe. Quite a few of the photos make the swimmers look as though they’re praying. And perhaps some of them were. Again, there was a variety of ‘poses’ with some swimmers coming well up out of the water and some keeping their heads down more than others. You can see that the girl top right has had to tuck her long hair into her cap.

The girl top left??? I thought that the one top left was a boy... did she lose the top part of her swimsuit?

Thanks, Anna. I have a lot of trouble with left and right! I've corrected it now. Thanks for pointing it out.

@JudyEv This is another thing we have in common, so many times I tell to my husband "now turn right.... NO, NO I wanted to say left"

@LadyDuck I do that once in a while, too, and then correct myself and say, "My other right."

I can see where that might be a challenge to photograph.

Each stroke had its challenges in different ways.

Thanks. There's not much action but that's the way it was.

But there's no water flying everywhere. *sigh* All you had to do with these swimmers was wait until they bobbed up to breathe and snap a shot of them.

True but they're not really 'doing' much, are they? They could just be posing for all the action that's going on.

@JudyEv Well, true, but that's not the photographer's fault. You get the shots you need.

Brilliant photos, once again. I love the way you've captured the movement of the water in a bow wave!

Thanks very much. I'd like to be able to say it's all intentional but that would be a fib. lol

This style is the most difficult of all. You captured the great action at the competition.

@jobelbojel Probably the easiest one to photograph was the backstroke as they are looking up at you.

this was the stroke that i was best at in swim club! It is a great long distance stroke as you don't have to churn your legs as fast!

Some really glided (glid?) through the water; others were bobbing up and down at a great rate. lol It does seem to be the stroke that takes the least effort..

@JudyEv swam at a high level it is a really demanding stroke. But when going for a distance, it is the easiest stroke!
