A few swimming photos that won't be going on our website

Here is a selection of photos taken at a swimming carnival we attended recently in Mt Barker, Western Australia. These are rejects that didn’t make the grade and won’t be put up on the website. One interesting point - Centre left you might notice the markings on the guy’s arm. Many of the swimmers wrote the number of their events on their arms and the stroke they had to do. If I blow that photo up, I can see a number then BR which I guess is for breaststroke. I have been talking a lot about how hard it was to take photos and have the face in clear view. Here, you can see faces are hidden with water and there is no way of identifying the swimmers. But doesn’t the diving person have lovely clean feet?

Your swimming photo discussions have reminded me of an incident at a swimming gala my son took part in about 15 years ago. I think I'll do a discussion on it later today. The guy centre left is obviously versatile as that looks suspiciously like butterfly he's doing in that photo. Don't you just hate people who are good at everything??

Are you thinking it is the same guy across the centre? It could be but each team had matching caps so at times they all looked alike. Having said that, some WERE good at every stroke and yes, I do hate them - very much!!

@WorDazza It's certainly butterfly that he's doing. There is an 'F' further up his arm which would be freestyle (hopefully!) but nothing that signifies butterfly. Maybe it's on the other arm.

They do have clean feet. I guess these pictures do not show the participants clearly. Is that the reason that they are not up to mark? What are your plans with them? Are you going to delete them?

Yes, because you can't see who the swimmer is, no-one would want them. I suppose eventually we'll delete them but they often just sit in our files for quite some time.

@arunima25 At the moment, we have a lot of memory but the day will come when we'll need to tidy up the files.

@JudyEv Deleting the pictures is another big task. I have quite a few sitting there and eating away the memory space. I need to delete them. It might take hours to do so.

I like those in the middle, even if you cannot see the face, those are interesting photos. The top left foot (let me think... yes left) is funny.

I was going to put a remark in the text, asking you if I had it right. But I managed all by myself! I liked some of these photos too with the whole body under water but we didn't think they'd sell so we didn't put them up. Not that it's all about selling but we had so many photos anyway we were really looking for ones to leave out.

@JudyEv I really like the one where you can see both arms out of the water.

Great shots! Love the feet. Found the number. I really don't understand why these are rejects. Not every shot can be perfect.

@just4him Oh sorry. I guess I got the wrong end of the stick because I actually like the ones with the whole body underwater and some where the head is hidden but it's pointless putting them up.

No-one would buy these shots as you can't tell who the swimmer is. And if you don't know who the person is, then they're not even very interesting. The clubs are still going to have to wade through hundreds looking for their 'people'.

Hey, I like the one of the one leg! You could sell that to a horror movie or something. I think you did a fine job, overall. It’s impossible to take every great shot of an “action” event like a swim meet. I’m sure that, for every “great photo” we see in a magazine, there’s six or seven hundred photos that were blurry or cut off or otherwise not usable.

I'm sure you're right. It would be good to know what percentage of pro photos are usable.

Action photos are difficult for they move too fast.

@JudyEv Very much so. Professional photographers have, very expressive cameras that can capture the swimmers movement, and one shot if face of swimmers. Some phones have the action shots every second taking a shot.

It was very, very tiring. They didn't stop for a break all day and we were on our feet almost the whole of the weekend.
