Celebrating the start of March

I have several Romanian friends and they tell me that in Romania the first of March is a day for celebrating the start of spring. One year one friend gave me this fabulous ‘spring’ cake, and another time another friend made little ‘spring brooches’ for us all to wear. I had never heard of this tradition elsewhere - do other countries celebrate like this? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2021.

No such tradition at the beginning of March in Germany. Is the cake made of marzipan?

The cake was made of layers of fruit mousse and chocolate cake but all the decoration was fondant icing I think. The red and white 'string' is traditional decoration and also was a key decoration attached to the little brooch.

That was a beautiful cake. I'm not sure I would have been willing to cut into it for a few days after getting it, though. Although, I'm sure Pretty would have insisted before the day was out. I haven't heard of anything like that in the US.

@Fleura So, did you cook a feast for March 1st? (Yes, I had to look that up. )

I've not heard of it anywhere else either. In Wales (my home country) March 1st is St David's day, the patron saint of Wales. But that is not celebrated in the same way.

@DaddyEvil No I'm afraid I didn't do anything at all this year, not even buy myself a bunch of daffodils (there are one or two in the garden, but I didn't want to pick those). Since living in England it has really become a non-event. Chinese new year gets more attention! I should really make more effort, at least at home.

@Fleura It is so pretty that it is a shame to eat, but a cake is made to be eaten.

It is lovely isn't it? She makes some beautiful cakes - delicious too! They are not at all like the sort of cake we are used to - more like a mousse.

Me too, I haven't heard of it anywhere else. Of course Wikipedia has some info about it (I just found); it does seem to be peculiar to Romanians

I don't know about other countries having pastry or brooch traditions for spring. But, I do know that meteorological spring begins March 1. I can ask my sister-in-law. She is from Romania.

It's amazing isn't it? This friend has changed careers (she had two sons, one of whom has autism so it is difficult for her to leave him anywhere and she needed to stay at home) so she has started work baking cakes instead. She has a real talent.

In America these kinds of celebrations are not used.
