Abject failure for The Horse drives him to drink.

All I needed was an adapter that would allow me to play my older headphones through my computer. My older headphones have a 1/4" male jack, like the one pictured. The computer has a smaller "3.5 mm" female jack. The cost of an adapter is 49 cents. I almost ordered a couple from Parts Express today. But shipping would have been $6. The guy on the phone (yes, a human) said, "Eh, just go to Walmart. There's no reason to pay $6 to ship a fifty cent item." I said, "Thanks for your honesty. I'll hit you guys up for bugger stuff." I've bought woofers, tweeters, capacitors, and such like from them in the past. They're good.
I drove to Walmart. They didn't have any. I went to Home Depot. They didn't have any. I went to Best Buy. They didn't have any. Fry's Electronics is shutting down and probably doesn't have any. The bottom line: I cannot find one of the most basic electronic/stereo adapters in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. If I had Scotch here, I would have had Scotch. I settled for wine.
Have you experienced a surprising FAIL recently?

I am left to wonder why he did not look up all these other stores before starting from home. If he had looked up and confirmed, all he needed to was to go to the exact store that had it, or decide on the cheapest option among the lot. I don't understand American conditions of course.

Sometimes, you aren't the most understanding person in the world, vanny.
You could have offered him a Sprite.

Uhm... Walmart probably did have one. In my store associates wouldn't know what you were asking for so couldn't help you find it. Go back to the Electronics Department and look in the TV accessories. You'll find a multi-pack of parts for headphones. The jack comes with an 18 foot (male to female) 3.5 mm cord, a headphone splitter (male to two females) and the adapter (3.5 mm male to 1/4" female). Here, the pack costs $11 but is the only way you can get it...
I hope this is enough information to help you find what you need, pony.

@DaddyEvil Dad has been to the US. But the National company considered that it may be given as gift to folks in other countries. It works out cheaper, does it not? When there is no standard stuff?

@vandana7 Most people don't need/want extra parts they don't know a use for so would end up throwing them away.
Did dad ever go to the US? If not, then those parts were useless and probably ended up in the trash. The materials could have been saved and used for something somebody did want/would use.

If the manufacturer of the computer bought it, and supplied it along with the computer, it would definitely work out cheaper, and simultaneously generate employment. Agreed it may not be needed in many households, but it may also be helpful for other devices in many households. I think I would want the problem addressed from the computer manufacturer's side.
Ideally, of course, standardize these things.

Heh. I actually computed it on the way home. I probably drive about 10 miles total. Gas is $3.50/gallon here. My truck gets about 22 mi/gallon on the freeway. So I spent close to $2 on gas yesterday. Happily, I DID run a couple of other errands along the way.

it is annoying that such jacks and adapters are not a standard size and design

Just reading your posts....
I'm sorry, that was cruel...funny, but cruel.
I agree with Daddy Evil, they probably DO have them at Wally World or Meijer, but you would need to tell them you need a "do-hickey" or a "do-jab" and describe it in order for them to know what you want.
Or...they'd probably just go, "Dude, why don't you buy some bluetooth headphones?"

@TheHorse -- I am, too. If you find a place without them, move there, then tell me where it is. No one else, though, because the idiots will move in and take over.

And this, my friend, is why we should have never let Radio Shack go out of business. They would have had the part you needed.

Thanks for the tip. I have an older pair of headphones. I'm sorry you weren't able to find the adapter. I'll have to see if Walmart has any. I haven't had a major fail lately.

Oh boy that would be annoying...can you order it online? I am sure I have. I am always screwing up something or other but nothing comes to mind at the moment.

I am failing on finding that one writing job I could have for the long term, Someone asked me for examples of my writing and I did send them to him but so far no answer, I have no idea about adapters but from what I could see online it looks like Amazon had all kinds of adaptors if that helps any,
