Found Out Why the Dogs Were Barking Last Night

When I went outside this morning to feed the dogs, I was walking along my normal path when I suddenly stopped. A little to the left of my foot was a heap of a dead animal. Upon closer observation, I found it to be a possum.
I stayed up last night doing this and that and commenting on mylot. When I started to get tried I went to my bedroom and got my book out to read for a bit. I read for about 35 minutes and decided it was time to turn out the reading light. I got all comfy in my bed and then it started. The barking, first from the big dog (german shepard) and then the howling from the little mixed terrier. I would tell them to hush and that lasted for all of a minute and they would go another round. I finally got my book back out and read some more until they stopped barking. I crashed after that.
So all the commotion early this morning was over a poor possum that didn't make it through the fight. I had to get hubby out to move the animal to the woods because we had a buzzard in the pecan tree waiting to eat the possum. I didn't want a flock of buzzards in the yard.
Possums are really not a threatening animal and they eat ticks and fleas, so not an animal that you would want to kill intentionally (unless they were getting into the chicken coop and eating chickens...that's another outlook!).
Do you have possums in your area or country?

Possums and armadillos are very abundant here where I live. I don't see raccoons as much, but they are also prevalent throughout Florida.

Yep, we have those too! Raccoons seem to be seen less these days. I remember seeing them often in the past. We had some that loved to scoop out our garbage can at our house in Louisisana. They would come under the carport, take the lid off and find some yummies. We caught them in the act a couple of times.

@kareng I never see raccoons around our neighborhood, but I do often see them when I am camping. For unsuspecting campers, those pesky raccoons will rob them of all their food during the night. But I always secure my food so that not even bears can get into it.

We do and kill them if we see them. They can carry a disease that is very dangerous for the horses.

@kareng If we didnt have the horses they would not bother me as long as they dont find a way into the chicken coop. They love eggs

Good watch dogs. No possums in Hawaii.

we do and they often during their mating season end up squashed by cars. Our fence is too high from them to get into our yard though.
