We are in Collie, Western Australia, taking photos at a horse endurance ride. Usually, Vin and I both go out on the track somewhere and try to find slightly different positions from which to take photos. This time, I stayed at the base camp taking photos of horses doing their trot-outs for the vets. This is to ensure the horses are fit enough to attempt whatever distance they’ve been entered for. This event is a little different in that some riders will be covering 80 kms on each of thress days – a total of 240 kms (150 miles). Others are doing a micro marathon (3 x 40 kms) or a mini marathon (3 x 20 kms). Some started at 4.00 am in at attempt to dodge the heat of the day. The collage shows a couple of candid snaps plus several from the vet ring. Do you like the plait on the pony top left? I like that the handler is totally in sync with her horse. Edit: Thanks @xFiacre for mentioning the red 'streamer' floating out under the tail of the horse, lower right. That is an indicator that the horse might kick other horses but most people use it to try to prevent others tail-gating.

Those are great pictures. I love the plait of the horse's mane.

Imagine how long the mane must be when it is unplaited!

Horses are very noble creatures. They (well, many) are so big and strong but they allow humans to ride them and will do all sorts of things for them.

I was really lucky with that shot as the horse was a long way away but the photo was still crisp when it was cropped so heavily. Here is the original.

@rebelann It is, isn't it? The lady now wants the photo without the child in the background. We can do that for her.

The pony top left is beautiful, but I also love the horse top right.

@JudyEv Can you believe that I did not notice the child? I was so focused on the horse.

@LadyDuck The background is blurred so most would not notice the child either. But I guess she wants nothing that might distract from her horse.

The top right is really gorgeous. We are going to 'erase' the child in the background for her.

@CarolDM That's a good idea but sometimes I end up with 300 photos from an afternoon. That's a lot to go through. With the new camera that I have, it is easy to delete some as I go along.

those are awesome pictures! I love dogs that are horse-trained. They know not to get underfood!

Many of the horse set have dogs. They have to be kept on leashes at the rides which is a good thing.

Very nice! Yes, I thought the braids on that horse were interesting. I assume the braid is to help with the heat later in the day. And I agree, I kept looking at that horse's legs trying to figure out what I was seeing.

Thick, heavy manes can make the horse hot and sweaty so they often braid them.

@JudyEv I've never seen that here, but may just have not paid attention, too. I know we never did that when I was growing up on the farm. We always owned horses back then.

@DaddyEvil The endurance horses can sweat really heavily. I suppose it would make a bit of difference.

A lot of the handlers 'trot' in sync with their horses. It's quite amazing.

@judyev I was a little troubled by the creature on the bottom right because it looks like it really should see a vet given the bright red colour of what I thought was squirting out from under its tail. Then I enlarged the photo and was mightily relieved.

@JudyEv Got it. Am now better informed. I might tie a red rag to my own rear to ward off followers.

Stallions are supposed to have a blue ribbon. And those riding stallions have red bibs rather than yellow ones.

I'm afraid riders tail-gate on their horses just like motorists do.

Yes, it's something we can continue doing from wherever we are living which is great. The 'village' doesn't have caravan and/or boat parking although some do but I think we have a friend with acreage where we could park it or we might have to pay a weekly fee somewhere.
