That husband of mine!!

This may get a bit long or twisted. My husband likes to buy and cook chicken livers for himself. He believes it helps with his anemia. We could not find any, all summer long, and into the fall. He found some some time back. They just sat in the refrigerator, so I froze them as he was not getting around to using them. Last week he put the sealed plastic container out of the freezer, to thaw. And left it. I put it in the refrigerator. Another week goes past. Yesterday, he decided to cook some. I cautioned him that they likely were spoiled. He said they smelled okay. I said it does not mean anything. He was sick all last night and appears to have food poisoning from his cooking adventure. He has been in bed all day. He doesn't listen.

When I thaw something, I cook it immediatly. And yes, chicken liver (as all liver) is good for anemia. AS long as it is not spoiled.

That is right. I do not like him buying stuff and then letting it sit too long.

Men seem to ignore their wives advice, or so I've noticed with my friends Carol and Hank.

One thing about Carol is that she always takes Hanks advice, I'm not so sure I would but then he's not my hubby.

Even I would think twice about eating those, and usually I'm not particularly fussy, Hope he gets better soon - and maybe learns from the experience?

We always have this conversation "It smells okay" and me saying "That does not mean anything." He is 75 years old, he should believe me.

@GardenGerty Mostly I would agree with him, the sniff test is a pretty good indicator. But liver always smells a bit 'off' anyway, and of course you have to take into account that your sense of smell gets less acute with age : (

We will see. Maybe the next time he wants to cook or eat something problematic, I will just look at him and say "chicken livers".

You did warn him but people get carried away. I have taken some risks too but mostly got away with them! I do hope he is getting better now.

@GardenGerty Do you think he will listen now after what happened when he cooked and ate them and got sick after you told him they were probably spoiled? I guess he had to find out for himself.

@GardenGerty Sounds like a very good idea. I hope that will show him to learn to listen to you when you tell him something because you were right.

Hope he recovers soon. I love chicken liver dish but often cook the livers the moment I brought them home. (if desperate, I will get any livers I could find in the supermarkets.)

Your hubby is a man. It may look like men have ears, but they (the ears) are non-functioning. You need to point a stick at 'em and then at whatever you want to tell them to do... and if they still don't understand, you need to poke 'em with said stick until they do it. And did you know that asking them if they took their vitamins is not caring about their health, but nagging?

I do not worry too much about the vitamins, more about the heart medicine.Vitamins are mixed in with those. Been worrying or nagging about that since he made himself sick.

I like chicken liver too. Poultry and other meat products and fish shouldn't sit too long in the freezer. Once thawed never put it back in the freezer, the bacteria will multiply.

@GardenGerty foods are tastier if they're not stored in the freezer for a long time.
