Don't worry about guessing - I'll just tell you what this is

I won’t ask you to guess what this is but will just explain it and not waste your time. My mother had a hip replacement at 99. She came to stay with us for a while before the operation. She was in quite a bit of pain from her hip and spent quite a bit of each day in bed. She would often call for me for one reason or another but sometimes I wouldn’t hear her. Vince concocted this ‘alarm’ for her to use. The black switch was mounted on a block of wood so it would be easy for her to find and activate. It was connected to a door bell unit which was loud enough to wake me if I was sleeping and/or to reach to all parts of the house. We were very pleased with our efforts but there was a downside. We found that Mum used the bell very, very often so I was forever running back and forth to her. Which was okay but really I just wanted to show you the bell we devised. Now I have to decide what to do with it. I guess I’ll keep it for when one of us need it. It might be fun to have Vince running back and forth at my beck and call.

More likely you would be the one who run at Vince's beck and call in the future.

I will hide it as soon as he looks like getting ill. He is hopeless at finding things so I'll be quite safe.

I think it's good to keep it for future use Ms. Judy. I hope Vince would not mind running back and forth though.

Haha - it might be tempting to use it for the least little thing. I wonder how long he could keep his temper. lol

@JudyEv You could try doing the experiment if he will be catching it.

Vince will probably just hire a kid off the street to run and see what you need instead of him doing it all the time. Or, if Vince is the one ringing the bell, I've just given you a great idea.

@JudyEv Did you get into a place. You have to share about it when you move there.

Unfortunately there mightn't be too many kids available in an over-55s community! lol

@jstory07 Yes, we're moving into a lifestyle village. I'll write about it when I know more and can take photos.

Except that very few houses here are more than one story. I think you call them bungalows.

Yep, it should be his turn to run. I would save it as well. I did a variety of things for my first husband to call me and communicate when he developed ALS.

If friend had something like that, it would probably be in the on position 24/7. . He will not be getting any bells!

@JudyEv When my poor grandad was in the nursing home, he would call my dad with strange requests like two McDonalds hamburgers, or a particular brand of comb or something..just a way to reassure themselves loved ones are still there I guess

I understand. Mum got a bit over-enthusiastic with it. I would get so annoyed as she'd ring it at night which was fine but wouldn't give me time to get there before she'd ring it again. And she was only in the next room.

That's a very clever device. I wear a whistle around my neck so that I can call my husband if I need him.

What a neat thing for Vince to do. And wow, surgery at 99, your Mom was a trooper.

They said she was healthy enough to have the op. She told the doctor it only needed to last six months as she just wanted to get to 100. He said it would last a lot longer than that. She lived to 104 but at least was pain-free mostly.
