Receiving stolen goods

The photo has nothing to do with the post but is of one of our grass trees with its flower stalks.
Anna (@LadyDuck) wrote about moving house and clearly marking boxes with their contents. Even so, she said the customs officers opened some boxes and then mixed things up. Being officials, you can’t stop them doing this. Her comment brought to mind something that happened to us when we first moved to the city.
Vince would go to the pub most Fridays with our neighbour. They would join a small group and enjoy a few drinks and a chat. No-one ever inquired much about the personal details of the others in the group. We didn’t have a VCR machine but one of the group said he had one he was selling. We bought the unit but later another of the group asked what make the first guy had procured for us.
To cut a long story short, the man who sold us the VCR worked for a removalist and would purloin various items that he knew he could sell. He justified his crimes by saying that insurance would cover the cost of new appliances. We were horrified and didn’t sleep for a week.

that is awful, i had a friend that offered me a computer once. it was a really high end Mac and he was selling it really cheap.
I finally figured out whose Mac it really was. Needless to say he wasn't my friend anymore.

@DocAndersen It's amazing how these companies don't jump on people who are stealing from them.

@JudyEv he had no ethics. I ran into him later he was working for the same company. He robbed that company blind. Several of us reported him, but they let him continue working for another 8 months.

Ha ha it's crime to purchase stolen goods too but without knowing it what we can do right. Anyhow we have to be very careful while purchasing something from unknown persons and without proper bills

It is a crime buying stolen items but one would not know that it is stolen when one buys second hand item and original invoice is not always available with the seller particularly if the items are old enough. One has to be careful buying new items on second hand basis without original invoice.

People can always justify their crimes, can’t they.
I know I’d be upset, too, so I can understand that you were.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, Judy!
Things like that can happen all too easily. I won't buy something from a person unless I know them very well.

@JudyEv I would have been flabbergasted and then mad! I probably would have talked to the police about it.

We didn't find out for some months so we just kept it. Which I guess wasn't very nice either.

I´m afraid that even people who work with judges buy stolen jewelry here.

@changjiangzhibin89 That's true. Vince quite enjoyed this man's company but then found out he is a crook.

That is not good at all, I am glad I lost nothing of the last boxes sent from Latvia to me in Florida of the end of my life there but guess what? The boxes arrived and the US customs would not accept them there were no lists of what was in them even though they were just personal belongings, They sent them all back to Latvia and my stepdaughter had to list everything and resend and by the time I got them all the glass from picture frames was broken and shards of glad had to be carefully removed,
