Looky my tulips made it thru below freezing temps

Last week our area had a warning out for a severe or hard frost. Not knowing how cold a hard frost gets I checked it out because it was 28 degrees F, -2.223 C a week or so before but the were no warnings then. It said any temp below 28F /--2.222 C that stays at that temp for three or more hours. In 2012 Michigan had abnormally high temps into the eighties (26.667 C) in March causing flowers and flowering fruit trees to bud. Then late spring we had a hard frost which caused all the trees and flowers to revert back into winter mode. None of the fruit trees had any fruit that year although the regular trees such as maple and oak etc for their leaves back some time after that as did the actual flowers. When I heard there was another potential for a hard frost after the nice spring we've had I talked with some other ladies and we prayed that Michigan would not get the hard frost. And we didn't. It did get down to 26 degrees F/-3.333 C in the night but only for two hours not three. Plus no frost came down to the ground or onto the windshields either. So my tulips made it thru. One looked sad but got back up a few days later. My hyacinths and daffodils are dying but they weren't great already before that night.

Tulips are strong flowers, they usually do well through freezing cold winters. Mine are already gone as well as the hyacinths and daffodils.

Mine just opened last week so they should last a bit longer I think, @Tampa_girl7

They look good for having survived some crazy up and down weather.

But our coldd wet winters and springs help us not get the drought conditions common in your neck of the woods.

Yeah, you do get a lot more rain and snow than I'll ever see.

That is great that the tulips made it through the freeze. We got to 27 two nights in a row. Our iris's made it which makes me happy. Our daffodils already stopped blooming before the cold snap.

@Dena91 It has to be lower than 29 for several hours to impact flowers and flowering trees.

Had three colors snap been a third day probably you're irises and my tulips wouldn't have made it. We're they calling for a hard freezer there too?

@MarshaMusselman The weathermen said it would get to 32 one night and 34 the next. But it got a little colder then they predicted.

Yes they are. I think I had red ones before. I'm not sure how long I've had the yellow.

Ours probably bloom later than yours seeing we're just starting to get the warmer temps that might stick around this time.

I'm glad your tulips managed to survive but it's a shame the hyacinths and daffodils didn't.

The other two were already dying before the cooler weather came. They were blooming weeks before the tulips did.
