I Am Blessed in My Friends

My friend and distant cousin Irene is a ball of energy. She has a new granddaughter who does take some of her energy but her accounting job has really slowed down and she needs something to use her energy on. Enter my attic. She arrived on Monday with her ex-husbands truck and went into my attic and started bringing things down. I did warn her I had a lot of suitcases that we no longer use. lol she loaded them all into her truck along with bags and bags of yarn that her cousin will use. She brought down bins of clothes for me to go through and we gave away tons of things. Today she was here at 9:30 am to get a load of things that can go to the dump. Things that have gotten broken, I am sure it is my grandsons when they are helping bring the AC units down etc but that is just a normal hazzard. She brought down some of the books I have stored up there. Many of them are from the time of the fire, things I was not able to throw out but after 25 years I am so ready to let go. I emptied a lower-level closet that was full of coats and sweaters and sent them off to the donation bin. A lof things have left my house in the last 2 days. Tomorrow we're tackling more books. She suggested waiting until nearer Christmas to tackle all the Christmas things and I have loads of antiques from my days as a deale. I still haven't tackled my Mom's things but this has been very good preparation and I am ready to get my house cleared out. I am so mad that I accumulated all this stuff. I need to make sure I am prepared for the day that Al may need to have a lot less stuff around the house. And if we need to see our home to get one that is better suited to his condition, it will be a lot easier.

It's so easy to accumulate things and so hard to give them up.

@rebelann I don't think it's good to get rid of a lot of things like that (inherited stuff) in a hurry, afterwards you might wish you hadn't. But if you keep it for a while then it becomes yours, and you can decide more objectively whether you really need it - at least that's what I have found.

She is, she truly understands how hard this is for me after I lost everything in a fire. She lost her home too.

You stopped me when you said you were an antiques dealer. Stopped me cold. I'm glad you made such headway in clearing out your house, though. Next year I will tackle hiring somebody to move the old dressers and tables that called my name at various times in my life.

I was a dealer for years but I packed it all in about 10 years ago. I love antiques still and Irene keeps saying you have some beautiful things in your attic!! I know I do but it is what to do with them at this point, they are not selling well right now. I stopped having them in my home when my grandkids were small, they are just not practical. I remember finding a lollipop stuck to my lovely antique sofa, I sold it!! lol

Many MyLotters are decluttering these days. I have been sending boxes and boxes of stuff to Goodwill and the Salvation Army for years; and I still have a lot to go. Good job! If you have to move, you will be glad you did it! That's truly a good friend who would do all of that for you!

I'm glad you managed to get rid of a lot of things. Mostly I don't keep unnecessary things, but my brother and my father collect everything.

with time you get attached to things as you have memories attached with those things, so its hard , but letting go always makes us have new ways to create new memories

@BelleStarr Know the feeling even with the smallest of things. We watch the "The Pawn Shop" I think you call it that over there because Rick and Chumlee are very much in the forefront of the program itself and Rick and his two sons do a great job in antiques stuff like coins sports memorabilia. Much better than all the other morb. We learn a lot of interesting things.

That was very sweet of her to help like she has. But I always remember, bread on the water always returns, and you are a do-gooder yourself, so you have it coming back as intended.

I am guilty of accumulating too many things over the years and I am now doing the same as you do... except the books, I gave some of them to the library, but I am going to keep most of my books.
