Cat persons. I need your help. Kitty just "clawed" me.

As you know, I am NOT a cat person. I find cats to be self-absorbed, selfish, and manipulative. But Kitty has convinced me that she loves me, so I answer to her every demand. Just now she was lying at my feet, resting up for a night of chasing mice and fence lizards. Suddenly, she jumped up and put her left paw on my lap as I sat at my computer. I reached down to pet her, and she clawed me with her other paw. Happily, she did not scratch me, but the presence of her retractable claws (barely extended) let me know that she was almost serious. She then settled back into her "queen of the world" position, and I gave her a serious purr fest. She likes her back scratched hard, and she likes some serious scratches behind the ears and on her throat, which she can't get to while she's grooming. Do you think I did the right thing? Is a good purr fest all she was after? I am glad I am not a cat person. They are more confusing than horses, even if horses are bigger and scarier to some people.

@TheHorse Yes, cat cannot see too well things close to them. It could be an affectionate gesture.

No, I think it was an affectionate gesture. Is it true that cats don't see that well?

Horses are easier to understand. But both horses and cats want to know that you don't want to eat them.

Umm, probably shouldn't have done that if she thinks it works she is liable to repeat the behavior. I have a situation with my cat when he thinks he is hungry he does this obnoxious meowing. I would totally ignore him because he always has food, but he also has pica and might start eating something inanimate if I don't give him what he wants.

@TheHorse I understand...mine isn't really big on being petted unless it is his idea..although he has never actually bitten me he will snap if he isn't in the mood.

Cats can be pretty manipulative. I don't mind if Kitty boxes with me, so long as she doesn't extend those sharp claws of hers.

@snowy22315 How does he snap? When Kitty wants to be petted, she arches her back and spanks me with her tail.

I think you need to be injected with anti-rabies.

@Shavkat No. I could feel her claws. She had them extended ever so slightly. But she just batted me.

@TheHorse Pretty cat likes to sit on the bar and grab at our shirts as we walk by. She does put the claws out just enough to truly catch material.

She sometimes boxes the back of my leg (claws retracted) when I walk by her and don't give her enough attention.

@TheHorse That's OK then! Our dogs either used to stare at us or paw at us...or in the case of the Pomeranians...they were more direct. They jumped in our laps!

You probably don't know this, but we cats sometimes purr when we're upset... it's a coping mechanism to calm ourselves. I'm sure you've run into some disturbed hoomins humming to themselves. =^..^=

I've had at least one cat since 1974 and I really can't tell ya what they want. Some are attention getters and would never harm you while others want to pet them only when they want to be petted and would swat me or bite me if I tried to pet them when they didn't want me to pet them. I prefer dogs but I have 2 cats. Go figure.

She was just playfully trying to get your attention. She was in the mood for your company.

It's been too many years since a cat owned me, pony. I decided to check and see if SciShow explained any cat facts that might help you be a better pet to Kitty.
The kitties we let into our homes and hearts can have some strange and endearing behaviors, and we've made a fur-midable number of episodes about them! If yo...
